A brillliant Cambridge combination led by a terrific
Trystan Smallacombe won the Bedford Bowl with a scintilating display against
Bedford's Cliff Graybrook, Neil Minchin, Mel Lemos and Frank Andrich.
.
The standard of play from the Cambridge players was top class. David Jones
led like a trojan with both bowls and was never far away even with a bad
bowl. Brian "Kelvin" Kiely was so good in the second spot and always
produced the goods at the critical moment, he is a very talented player.
Man of the match however was Chris Lander, and I am sure he would have driven
Cliff Graybrook crazy with his sheer consistency and precision. No matter
what, he always had
two ultra close bowls in the action and when called upon to play weight, it
undid the good work of the Bedford front end with telling results.
Trystan Smallacombe is a class act and that was on display in this game. He
gets the best out of his players with his quite demeanour and clever calls and
is never rattled by the any situation..Trystan got his side away to a great start
early in the game taking a Bedford bowl out of the head for 4 shots and that
set the tone of the game there after.
The Bedford team gave it their best shot and were far from disgraced, they just
happened to run into a brickwall today.
The Cambridge boys won 8 of the 11 ends in this game and were very worthy winners
indeed. Congratulations Cambridge
In the section play Trystan Smallacombe won 4 of his 5 games and a + 51 with
Bill Galloway being the only team to nail them, 13/8.
Cliff Graybrook won 4 + a draw + 19 in his section

David Opie,Norm Ball, Brad Ball and the old Mr
reliable himself, Chris McMahon, finished second after defeating Rhett Butler
in a tight game and led 7/3 after 6 ends had been completed. With ends running
out for Rhett Butler's team of John Trewhella, John Birch and Matty Trewhella
and they came storming back into the game to level the scores at 7/7 on the
second last end. The last end saw the Hilton Boys down 1 on the skips crossover.
David Opie played a magnificent Bowl, as he seems to do so often, to trail the
Jack back for a big, big, big 5 then super cool he drew another to win the game
13/7 and second place.
David and his team won 5 of the 11 ends. They also lost one game in the section
to The Nth Beach team of J. Cole 10/24 which included dropping an 8.
Rhett Butler and his team were sensational throughout the Bowl, winning all games
and finishing with a staggering 5 + 71 agg.
Last years winners, led by Mark Pasalich who had
George. Zelich
M. Marovic
V. Mladineo with him
had a close
game against Lance Strahan, getting away to a great start with a five on
the first end, then slipping away to lead 9/3 on the 5th end. Where to from
here for Lance and his boys. Well they steadied the ship and regained the
inititive to come charging back into the game and went into the last end
9/10 down, however it was Mark and his boys who were the victors winning
12/9 to come third.
Mark and his rink won 5 of the 11 ends.
Mark went thru the section play winning 4 games plus a draw + 25 agg
Lance had Daniel Wood who is a great recruit, along with John Carlsen and Vaughan
Colley in his rink won all his games and finished with 5 wins and a + 59 agg.
