REVIEW ONE BLUE SOUTH ROUND
THIRTEEN
Hilton Park 101 (7) d Victoria Park 57 (1)
Hilton travelled to Victoria Park for this rearranged fixture (played on Sunday 4th) and won very convincingly.
From the start Hilton were out of the blocks fast and never looked like being caught.
Travis Simpson, with Luke Garbutt, Chris McMahon and Wayne Simpson blew Nev Young away losing only 4 ends in a 38 - 6 victory.
Eddie Clarke with George Annandale, Ernie Grose and Luke Mallone easily accounted for Rod Volich 27 – 12 while David Opie, Danny Slade, Les Onley and Ian Blanch were never in trouble against Brent Scott winning 21 – 14.
At one stage it looked as though Hilton would get all
8 points but Craig Parnham’s rink pulled away strongly over the last 6 ends to give Norm Ball a rare defeat 25 – 15.
This win cements Hilton’s third place and keeps them in with a chance of
catching Spearwood and Mosman Park, however someone will have to beat Mossies
to keep the competition alive.
Manning Eagles 84 (6½) d East Fremantle 68 (1½)
East Fremantle hosts Manning Eagles in a game that is vital to both teams.
Bill Pengilly, well supported by his rink, that included the ever reliable Brian Jeppessen as his second, played very consistent bowls. After being 11 to 5 down in the early stages they picked up a seven. This sparked a revival that saw them run out winners over Bruno Zarins’ rink by 30 to 15.
The other three games finished much tighter, and although the Eagles jumped away to good start, the Blue & Whites fought back.
James Jaworski’s rink had their ninth consecutive win and tenth for the year, with a two shot margin over John Brewer.
With Tony Hockey returning to the One Blue side and Greg Fairhead once again assuming the role of skipper, where he looked far more comfortable, this rink looked far better balanced and managed a draw with Reg Bullen at 17 all.
Gary Mitchell gained his point with a hard fought 19 to 18 win over Milan Jokic.
There was a tightness to the Manning rinks that has not necessarily been evident across all rinks so far this season.
Melville 80 (5) d Mosman Park 72 (3)
In a major upset the struggling Melville upset competition pace setters Mosman Park 5 – 3 in a desperate bid to save relegation.
The game was always a tight affair with no more then half a dozen shots separating either side. The difference between the sides was the Melville rink of Randall, Lee, Keating and Murray who easily accounted for Doug Rodgers Mosman Park quartet 27-14.
The other three rinks went Mossies way however all were tightly fought encounters. Lester Mortimer’s rink snatched victory on the last end against Neville Brierley, as did John Rainoldi against the always dangerous Glen Beard.
Peter Cole’s rink recorded a three shot victory over Gary McCormack’s four however the effort of this Melville rink to fight back from a much larger deficit helped Melville record an inspiring win.
Much has been said about Melville’s lack of passion in this division however this was no where to be seen on Saturday with the home side showing enough passion to suggest they will not be leaving the division come the end of round 18.
Rockingham 78 (7) d Carlisle Lathlain
71 (1)
Rockingham hosted Carlisle Lathlain in an important match for both sides, with Rockingham wanting to stay in touch with the top four and Carlisle looking to clear out of the relegation zone; at the end of the day Rockingham at home proved too strong for the visitors.
For Rockingham John Lethlean (21 to 20) had a tight tussle with Angelo Scaini the scores were never separated by much all day, John would be a lot happier this week than the last outing, Watson McIlveen (18 to 14) was too strong for Russell Simms while Keith Gould (22 to 17) over Tony Dibello continues his strong form this year.
For the visitors John Sheridan (20 to 17) had a close game with Steve Wales, this was John’s second week as skipper and it’s two from two.
Spearwood 94 (7) d Midland Morrison
64 (1)
Midland travelled to Spearwood looking for an upset to give them a chance to climb out of the relegation zone, Spearwood needed to win well to stay in touch with Mosman Park the final result was a good win for Spearwood.
For Spearwood Marin Sokol (35 to 10) and his re-energised rink powered away from Martin Wattleworth from the 8th end, with Ivan Unkovich as his third the rink was always in command, with Jim Ricci and Nick Sokol providing front end pressure the Midland boys found the going very difficult.
Italo D’Ascenzo (24 to 17) overcame John Snell; the home side also broke away from the 8th end to establish a very good lead that proved too difficult to overcome.
Boris Yakas (24 to 19) had a very good game with David Rhodes, the Midland
boys jumped the home side but to Boris’s credit the Spearwood side came back
to snatch back the lead at the 10th end, David played some excellent shots
to even the scores at the 19th end, for Boris Joe Salmeri led magnificently
with Stan Gvozdin and Ivo Dragicevich playing major roles.
For David,
Aaron Staples also led extremely well to set up a tight finish; the second
last end resulted in one shot to the home side the last end saw the leads
place all four bowls on the jack, the seconds came in and moved the jack
to each others advantage the thirds doing the same David played two drives
which never disturbed the head to give Boris a further 4 shots.
For Midland Gary Willis (18 to 11) over Tonko Fiamengo was the only winner for
Midland, Gary played extremely well all day ably supported by his rink, the
game was all tied up at the 10th end but the Midland team edged away from
that point on to record a good win.
