Review One Blue South ROUND SIXTEEN:

Spearwood 82 (7) d Mosman Park 69 (1)

Mosman Park hosted Spearwood for a season determining game; Mossies were on top of the table while Spearwood were 3rd, Spearwood played superb bowls to unsettle the home side and come away with 7 valuable points.

For Spearwood Boris Yakas (21 to 17) had a tremendous tussle with Peter Cole the lead changed on four occasions and were level on two ends, Boris was in very good form and had good support from his rink, Tonko Fiamengo (20 to 11) led all the way against Lester Mortimer, Tonko’s front end Brian Blagaich and Steve Glamuzina provided close bowls, which enabled Ken Nadilo his third and Tonko to close out the game.

Italo D’Ascenzo (26 to 18) against Doug Rogers had a tough encounter all day, with a six on the 14th end opening up the game in Spearwood’s favour.

For Mossies the only winner on the day was John Rainoldi (23 to 15) against Marin Sokol, John leapt out of the starting blocks to be 15 to 1 by the 7th end, to Marin’s credit the Spearwood rink steadied and fought back to go down by 8.

East Fremantle 90 (7½) d Carlisle Lathlain 80 (½)

The Blue & Whites travelled to Carlisle in a game of 9th v 10th - the result virtually leaving the loser with relegation. Prior to the game, speeches were made lamenting the loss of Bill Paterson during the week - a great stalwart and loyal Carlisle Lathlain member. This set the trend for another great and close game between these two sides, which have had very close games over recent years.

This was to be no exception. Carlisle Lathlain started well on their very slick 17.5 second greens - something that is expected from this venue. After five ends East Freo held a slight lead of 23 to 17, with the Blue & Whites just in front. After 10 ends, Carlisle was leading 41 to 40. After 15 ends the score was 64 to 59 in Carlisle's favour, with Bob Sims from Carlisle holding a 9 shot lead over Gary Mitchell's rink.

The Blue & Whites settled better in the last quarter, with a brilliant effort from Gary Mitchell's rink again to draw 23 all. Special mention to Dave Cotton who bowled brilliantly to assist his team mates in this comeback.

Bruno Zarins' rink played well against Angelo Sciani's rink, getting in front for the first time on the 15th end, they held on to win by 5 shots with the lead changing numerous times. Reg Bullen's rink also had a close game against Tony Dibello's rink, with the lead changing 5 times.

John Brewer's rink set up the win early by having a 7 shot lead after 10 ends, finally running out winners by 1 shot over John Sheridan’s rink.

Manning Eagles 91 (7½) d 65 (½) Hilton Park

Manning continued their much improved form at Hilton Park on Saturday. Early in the contest, both David Opie’s rink and Norm Ball’s rink had substantial leads, (11-0 in both instances) against Bill Pengilly and Greg Fairhead. Both Greg’s and Bill’s rinks stuck to the task and overcame the early deficit. Peter Bowden was very steady in the leader’s position, as was Tony Hockey in the third spot. Dave Steineck and Greg Fairhead drew beautifully to eek out a thrilling one shot win.

Peter Bowden Manning (pictured) played a great leaders game against Hilton Pk

Bill Pengilly managed a draw with David Opie, with Ron Kerr leading well and consistently putting close bowls in the head. Phil Gillespie contributed positively to the fight-back. He has had a very consistent season.

Both Milan Jokic’s and James Jaworski’s rinks had comfortable wins against Eddie Clark and Travis Simpson respectively. They continue to provide a solid platform for the Manning drive for the top of the table.
The win by Spearwood against Mosman has created a good deal of interest in the next couple of games where the top four sides meet one-another.

Rockingham 90 (8) d Victoria Park 58 (0)

Rockingham took advantage of its home ground and gained maximum points over the Reds.
All four Rockingham rinks jumped out to a great start and were well in front after a few ends. Keith Gould had a big win of 14 shots over Craig Parnham. Watson McIlveen defeated The Rocket by 9 shots and Steve Wales defeated the retired Journo, Nev Faulkner, by 8 shots.

The only close game of the day was between John Lethlean and Brent Scott. Although John got out to an early lead Brent pegged it back and led by 3 shots with 1 end to play however John was able to get 4 shots on the last end to win by 1.

Midland-Morrison 79 (7) d Melville 67 (1)

A very important win for the Midland side, it keeps it outside the relegation zone while the Melville side will need to regroup and keep focused for the remaining games of the season.
For Midland David Rhodes (19 to 17) fought out a tight game against Nev Brierley, David is having a very good season and continues to perform well, John Snell (24 to 14) had a good win against Mal Randall. Gary Wills (22 to 18) against Gary McCormack ensured the home side came away with the 7 points.

Glen Beard Melville (pictured) has made a successful return to play skip and doing a great job

For Melville the only winner for the day was Glen Beard (18 to 14) over Martin Wattleworth, Glen has been very consistent since his return for Melville, his performance and his rink is noteworthy and has made a significant difference to the Melville side.

Completion of Round 15:
Spearwood 91 (7) d Hilton Park 65 (1)

Spearwood hosted Hilton Park to complete the 15th round deferred due to David Opie’s participation in the Australian championships:

Spearwood needed to win the deferred game to stay in touch with Mosman Park, the game attracted a good audience with a lot of atmosphere to boot, both sides were intent on victory and on a green that was running a surprising 17 seconds all credit to the Spearwood green-keeper on his work to prepare the green for Sunday’s game.

For Spearwood Marin Sokol (35 to 15) over Travis Simpson set up the home side, Marin’s rink is working very well with Jimmy Ricci and Nick Sokol combining well and with Ivan Unkovich providing great support all day.

Boris Yakas (20 to 11) was too strong on the day for Bob Ball, Boris is having one his best years and his play when down is stirring stuff. Tonko Fiamengo (19 to 16) had a great game with Norm Ball, Norm had Eddie Clarke playing as a third which made it one of the strongest Hilton Parks sides on the day, both Norm and Eddie played great bowls all day but the front end for Tonko worked well and gave him and third Ken Nadilo bowls to work with and options to play.

For Hilton Park the only winner was David Opie (23 to 17) over Italo D’Ascenzo, David converted many times during the day his control and shot play shows why he is so highly rated, the game was all even on the 16th, the score changed two more times until the last four ends when David played great bowls to earn a hard fought point for the visitors.
