Review One Blue South ROUND SEVENTEEN:
Manning Eagles 76 (6) d Mosman Park 73 (2)
This contest was a game of played in two halves, with Mosman Park jumping
out of the blocks to lead 43 shots to 26 at the half way mark. Lester Mortimer’s
rink was well on top of James Jaworski’s side with a 14 to 5 lead (Don Evans
playing particularly well). while the Rogers rink held an 11 to 4 lead on
Greg Fairhead’s charges.
Milan Jokic and John Rainoldi were having an epic tussle with the scores
at 10 to 8 in Milan’s favour, while Bill Pengilly’s team were down 12 to 7.
Some big conversions by James Jaworski sparked a revival both on his rink and
across the Eagles other rinks.
Milan Jokic Manning (pictured) takes on one of the giants
of the game and wins for Manning
Greg Fairhead, ably supported by his three
colleagues played some telling draw shots in the second half to get within
5 shots (19-14), while Milan Jokic and his boys (Viv Andrews, Mark Matthews
and Frank Carbone), continued their business-like approach to take the points
against John Rainoldi (24-11).
Bill Pengilly’s rink fought hard to snatch the lead briefly at the fourteenth
end, only to be over-run at the finish by Peter Cole going down 26 to 16.
With Manning holding a two shot aggregate lead, Jaworski’s rink was left on the
green with an end to play against Lester Mortimer. After the sixteen bowls had
been played, Jaworski held three shots and Manning won the aggregate by five.
The Manning win has set up a very interesting finish to the One Blue South season,
with both Spearwood and Mosman Park on 90½ points at the top of the table with
only one game to play.
Manning is 5 points behind in third ready to pounce should
the unexpected occur.
Spearwood 70 (6) d Carlisle Lathlain 65 (2)
Spearwood hosted Carlisle in a season determining game for the home side,
Spearwood won on the day, however the Carlisle side were never far away.
Based on the performance on Saturday it is difficult to see why Carlisle
are where they are.
They have the players of the calibre of Tony Di Bello,
Angelo Scaini and Denis Green and will return to this division in a very
short time.

Boris Yakas Spearwood (pictured) heads the skippers list in One Blue South
in another stellar season for his club
For Spearwood Boris Yakas (24 to 11) against John Sheridan was once again the
foundation for the home side; Boris and his rink steadied the Spearwood team
in the last 8 ends to ensure an aggregate win.
The scores were tied at the
14th end at 11 all from that point on the home side won all the ends in a
dominating display; Boris’s season is one of his best (13/4 for a plus 121)
his contribution to the Spearwood side is immense.
The other Spearwood rink
to feature strongly Marin Sokol (19 to 15) against Robert Simms, this rink
led for the first half of the game with the scores tied at the 13th end,
from that point Marin with very good support from his players established
a winning score line that wasn’t headed.
For Carlisle Mike Simms (21 to 14) beat Italo D’Ascenzo in a close encounter,
the home side led early to set up a handy lead only to clawed back by the 16th
end where the scores were tied at 13 all from there the visitors inched away
to an excellent 7 shot win.
The other win for Carlisle was in the form of Tony
Di Bello (18 to 13) over Tonko Fiamengo, Tony’s side jumped out to establish
a 14 to 2 lead by the 11th end, the home side to their credit recovered in the
second half to minimise the damage and close the gap to 5, Tony was superbly
supported by his third Dennis Green.
Hilton Park 77 (6½) d Midland Morrison 66(1½)
Hilton got back on track with a comfortable win over Midland Morrison which probably secures their place in the four, ensuring finals action. Although Midland stuck to their task well and fought back in the second half of the game the result was never really in doubt.
Brad Ball's rink was always in control over John Snell and ran out easy winners (24 – 12). Norm Ball's rink led all afternoon, at one stage by 12 shots, but survived a spirited fight back from David Rhodes rink to win (18 – 16).
David Opie went into his last end against M. Wattleworth holding a 1 shot lead but was 5 shots down on the end, going to the mat. David in his usual calm and confident manner proceeded to draw within an inch of the jack only to see his opponent drive the jack into the ditch in an unbeatable position to secure a draw.
Travis Simpson who trailed G Willis's rink all day came back strongly to narrow the gap to 3, 17 - 20. To their credit Midland never gave up and with a home game to finish with next week against Vic Park have their destiny in their own hands.
Rockingham 78 (6) d East Fremantle 75
(2)
Rockingham wins a close encounter to cement their position on the table just outside the top four.
After five ends, East Freo had a one shot lead, 18 to 17, after ten ends still one shot 38 to 37and at the fifteenth Rockingham was in from 58 to 57; this was the trend through out the game as Rockingham claimed victory over a gallant Blue and Whites.
John Brewer's rink very nearly got the aggregate with a (24 to 17) win over John Lethlean's rink. John B's rink scored a five on the sixth end to level the scores at 7 all and apart from the seventeenth end when the scores were 17 all; the home side never lost the lead, coming home strongly to score 7 shots over the last four ends.
Keith Gould's rink almost snatched a point against Bruno Zarins' rink after being down 19 to 14 on the fifteenth end before losing (21 to 19).
Gary Mitchell's rink had a very close tussle with Bob Costello's rink with the lead changing five times over the game. After leading 4 to 0 after three ends, Bob's rink went to a 15 to 6 lead after 12 ends. Gary's rink fought back to lead 18 to 17 after nineteen ends, however could not beat two brilliant trail shots on the last two ends by Bob's rink that saw them win (21 to 18).
Reg Bullen's rink played against Watson McIlveen. Their first eleven ends were close with the lead changing four times in the first eleven ends when Watson held a 9 to 7 shot lead. They then won seven of the last 10 ends to win (21 to 12).
Melville 106 (8) d Victoria Park 65
(2)
Victoria Park hosted Melville, the Park was 5th while Melville were 7th,
the Magic needed a win to ensure they were safe and came away with 8 valuable
points, their second half of the season is how this side were expected to
perform, while a depleted Vic Park can be proud of their performance narrowly
missing the play offs in their first year back in One Blue.
For Melville
Glen Beard (31 to 16) over Craig Parnham led the way, Glen continues his
very good form and is a huge bonus for Melville, Mal Randall (24 to 11) accounted
for Rod Volich.
Gary McCormack (25 to 11) was too strong for Mike Jones and
to round off a top day for the Magic Nev Brierley (26 to 19) over Nev Faulkner
was the only close encounter.
