SWANS SWOOP TO SECURE SECOND SPOT
In a sensational last round Sorrento Swans have grabbed the double chance by finishing the season in second spot behind Dalkeith/ Nedlands. In a round of fixtures that all went Sorrento's way they defeated third placed Bassendean eliminating them from the finals whilst Cambridge made the four by defeating the previously second placed Osborne Park.

Both Sorrento and Osborne Park finished on 81.5 points each but Sorrento won the double chance by the barest of percentage (6 shots). On Saturday Osborne Park lost by three (3) shots whilst Sorrento won by twenty four (24). With second spot the furtherest notion in the mind of the players, Sorrento collectively added 16 shots on the last end of all rinks.

This has been a terrific effort by the Swans because at no stage did they seriously challenge for top spot but have come home quickly to overtake the more fancied contenders in Osborne Park & Bassendean.
Next week will be a great challenge for the young Swans as Dalkeith is the only side we have not beaten this season.

1st Semi - Osborne Park vs Cambridge
2nd Semi - Dalkeith/Nedlands vs Sorrento

Games at Dalkeith Nedlands Saturday April 8, commencing 9.30 am.

Sorrento (7) def Bassendean (1)
In my preview last Thursday I rated Sorrento's best chance of winning was for the rink that played Bassendean's leading rink skippered by Tom Norac to keep it close. My reasoning being that this tactic would enable the other Sorrento teams to amass enough points to win the aggregate. Well, the Sorrento rink skippered by John Hammond completely ignored my advice and won 31-14 ensuring a Sorrento win.
Whilst Hammond was always in control the other three rinks were down and at about the 65th end Bassendean held a narrow aggregate lead. With Bassendean not making the four it probably avoided the situation whereby the club were on a collision course with BowlsWA.
Bassendean had signalled their attention to send a severely weakened side to the finals as a protest against the current One Blue promotional system

Cambridge (6.5) def Osborne Park (1.5)

This was somewhat of a surprise given that it was played at Osborne Park. The good news for both clubs is that you have to do it all again next Saturday at a neutral venue.

Bedford (7) def Sportsmen's (1)

With the results of the other games Bedford's chances of making the finals were eliminated. They were expected to win this game and that they did. We will see you all next year.

Bedford got away well in three of the four games. Shane Shaw has continued to impress as a skipper and has a great manner toward his team mates and they have responded to him very well.

Shane says
Well another season finished and 7 points to the bulls. On our rink today we were only behind on 2 ends and the rest of the game we kept leading from the front. We won by 13 shots I believe and if it had not been for the opposition skipper John O'Sullivan that total would have been a lot more. Great game to Nigel (nice arse) Minchin, saved the day a few times and played well for his adoring fans who watched him all day. Well done Ken Perks and John Carlsen both played good games also. It has been the highlight of my season playing with you guys it’s a shame the season is over I will miss our Saturday afternoons on the green. It would have been interesting guys to see how many we could have won if we played all season.
Well done and great bowling. Secondly on behalf of myself and the boys, thanks to Sherro, Tim and all the other contributors to the Bedford website. You guys have done a great job and look forward to reading the site in the offseason.

Dave Scott had a comfortable lead in his game 20/3. From that point in the game the Sporties boys put their heads down and got great value from the leader Peter Farrel and the second who lifted considerably to have an impact on the game While Skipper Steve Roberts was doing well also. They caught up to be 13/20 down. It was hard work for both sides from that point on but saw Dave's rink steady to win 28/18
Best Player was Bedford's Steve Rushforth who hardly put a foot wrong thru the game while the best for Sportsmans was between Pearce and Roberts.
Kevin Burkes rink had a hard game losing to Colin Smith 23/29.
They were 4/16 down and come back very well. Colin Smith has had a good year and to see his rink win this game was no surprise.

Dalkeith/Nedlands (8) def Morrison Park (0)

The promotion winners crushed Morrison Park who were playing their last game before amalgamating with Midland.
Congratulations to Dinko Golem for skippering the division leading rink this season. Not that surprising when we look at your outstanding record over the years.

Doubleview def Nollamara In a game that was not played for anything but pride, it turned out that way. Doubleview won by a solitary shot
