Murray's Review on One Blue North.
Round Nine
January 16, 2006
This week I managed 3 out of 5 this week after forgetting my medication on
Friday and selecting Cambridge to defeat Osborne Park.
GAME OF THE DAY
Bassendean def Sorrento (72-70) 5.5-2.5
What a beauty.
Down to the 84th end with Sorrento having already won on two rinks and drawn
on a third watching on as Tom Norac and John Hammond played their last end
with one shot in the aggregate.
Sorrento held two good shots to a "sprung
jack" before Marcel Heruer drew to within centremetres to give Bassendean
shot. Neil Adams responded with a superb draw shot but missed out by the barest
of margins in getting shot. Both John and Tom played good line bowls but did
not disturb the head leaving Bassendean with a two shot win.
All Bassendean skippers did their job with Kevin Beaglehole in particular
head into his last end 14-17 down on the 83rd end when a played a shot with
good weight albeit a bit wide, got a touch of a side bowl bringing him back
onto the jack and trailing it perfectly for 3 shots and a 17-17 draw. In its
own right it was the match winning bowl. Congratulations to Bassendean.
Osborne Park def Cambridge (82-75) 6-2
This game was a lot closer than many of the pundits would have predicted. Osborne
Park's win was set up by Dante Mariani and his powerful rink easily accounting
for John Dawson 30-12.
An interesting side issue is that Rance Dewson and team lost their first game
of the season to the in form rink led by Gary Hawkes.
Doubleview def Nollamara (99-66) 8-0
Doubleview blank-sheeted Nollamara in a convincing display. Stan Curtis and
his team once again led the way with a thumping 29-15 win. Good to see Stan
recovering from a slow start to the year and producing the bowls we all know
he is capable of. Even though we are only at the half way point of the season
the defeat for Nollamara means they have almost certainly booked themselves
passage to the second division next season
Dalkeith def Morrison Park (86-63) 7.5-0.5
As expected Dalkeith on their home track were too steady for Morrison Park.
Mark Krajancic led the way with a very good win. Dalkeith are positioning themselves
well for a crack at top spot whereas Morrison Park will probably have to look
towards next year for promotion. Such a pity with only half the season completed.
Gary Ellis Dalkeith (pictured) Caught Gary with his eyes shut but don't let
that fool you, he certainly knows where the jack is
Bedford def Sportsmen's (80-74) 7-1
This is another game that was much closer than most would have expected. Bedford
jumped out of the blocks and had 15 shots up on the first end with all rinks
getting away very well and all leading comfortably. This was a surprise because
this was the heaviest green that we had encountered this season due the heavy
rains of a day or so before hand .
Craig Greenhalgh kept his Burswood Classic form going, he was 10/0 down and
came back to account for Kevin Burke
easily.
Dave Scotts rink got away to a great start leading 10/2, only to see a great
fight back from Barry Raynor and his boys. Going into the last end he was only
two behind, unfortunetly dropping a five and losing 25/18 Dave Scott and Steve
Rushforth were best in their rinks win whilst Dave Membrey who played extremely
well until about the 14th end was very good
and John O'Sullivan
was outstanding
(again)
for
Sporties.
John O'Sullivan Sportsmans (pictured) played a very good game for Sporties
Other results went as expected with Cliff Graybrook accounting for Mick Dingley
though the score line of 17-15 suggests it was a very good game.
Peter
Hunter and his rink had a fight on their hands. However it was Peter Hunter
who played
a very good game to save the day for Bedford to defeat Colin Smith. 19/12
