Round 18 Premier division Click here to return to Pennant Scene

The final four has been settled in an exciting conclusion to the home and away games. Cockburn have made the final four after their worst ever start to a pennant season. Their win against Leeming was expected, they had to win 8/0 to make sure they gave themselves every chance, and that is what they came up with on the last bowl of the game. Bedford Bulls also had to win 8/0 and if results went their way they could make the finals. They missed that target in their fine win against Melville winning 7/1.
Osborne Park proved too good for last years Premiers winning 6/2 to finish the season in second place and the double chance. Cambridge win 6.5/1.5 and which allows Kalamunda to remain in the Premier League for next season. Doubleview win as expected while Morley got no points for the game and now return to One White division.

BEDFORD BULLS (7) def MELVILLE (1)......89/74

The Jones Boy (skip), Paul Hunter, D. Scott, V.Colley------------------33
Cam Girvan (skip), B. Mitchell, S. Hughes , J. Andrew....---------------16

This was payback for the Jones Boy who was smashed by Cameron Girven in the first round. The Jones Boy and rink got away to a handy start to lead 6/2 after 3 ends. Cam Girvan came back hard to lead 11/6 on the 7th end. From here on the Jones Boy's rink put the after burners on and away they went to lead 20/11, 22/14, 29/14 and finally win 33/16.
This was great return to form for the Jones Boy and his rink who haven't had a great run of late.
Where to for Cameron Girvan and his rink as they have now lost their last three games and are looking shakey for the finals.

Bedford won 13 ends to 8

S.Bainbridge (skip), G. Hill ,  S.Rushforth, P. Healy ------ --------.--..-.22
Jon Sharp (skip), B. Gearing, R. Barnes, John Birch--.-----------------.12

A good way to finish off the season with a very good win against Jon Sharp who has been in tip top form in the past 5 games. After the game Jon said that he had not had a good game today.
The game was close up till the 9th end, scores 7/6 and from here on Stu Bainbridge and the rink got away to lead 14/9 on the 14th end. They kept the pressure on to lead 18/11, 18/12, and finally win 22/12

Bedford won 13 ends to 9

C. Graybrook (sk) B. Gartrell, B. Donovan, N. Minchin ------------------17
A. Provost (skip), S. Knott, C. Fleay, Doc Oakley......------.. ...-------.---.13

This was a very good game and started out with a surprise, Doc Oakley playing lead and Shane Knott playing three. It has been a while since Doc led in a game.

A head of one of the many good leaders bowls in the leaders duel between Doc Oakley and Neil Minchin. Doc won the battle but Neil Minchin did a pretty fair sort of a job for his team

The good Doc led brilliantly from the first bowl and was on top of Neil Minchin giving the Magic the start they wanted. Bedford had to overcome this great start by Doc with Bob Donovan doing a great job and Barry Gartrell playing a cracker of a game as three and Cliff Graybrook doing well as skipper and in the first 10 ends we saw Bedford lead 9/3.
Up to this point of the game Colin Fleay was also doing a great job playing two, backing up the great leading of Doc Oakley. The back half of Anthony Provost and Shane knott had little influence and were well below their best. Ant did save a couple of big scores, 4 down to one down and 3 down to 1 up in this period.

------------------DOC OAKLEY GREAT LEADERS GAME FOR MELVILLE

----------------------------

-------------BARRY GARTRELL PLAYED A TELLING GAME AS THREE TODAY

----------------------------
From here on the big Ant lifted his rating as did Shane Knott and the score was 9/9 on the 13th end. It was tough going for both sides, Neil Minchin tho he was losing the leaders duel still played plenty of good bowls for his side.

The last seven ends saw the Bedford boys inch away in a dour struggle for supremacy with plenty of great bowls from both sides to win 17/13 in a very good standard game.

Bedford won 12 ends to 9

Best Players

P. Harris (skip), L.Strahan , D. Wood, M. Lemos,--.----------------------17
R.Butler (skip) ,B.Alexander, R. Kennedy, H. Mosford ....-------------...33

A costly loss for Bedford. After leading 11/0 on the 5th end, Pieter Harris's rink caved in to score only 4 more times for the rest of the game.
Rhett Butler played a great game for the Magic and he was magic today.
a look at an abbreviated scorecard shows 11/0, 11/8, 14/8, 14/13, 14/18, 14/26, 14/32, 17/33.
This was Pieter Harris, Lance Strahan and Daniel Wood's last game for Bedford and it is hard to imagine that Pieter and Lance could be outclassed in such a manner and at such a time of need. But as they say "that's bowls for yah"
A great win for Rhett and the rink after a tough trot in the past 6/8 games and will would be a great boost to them for the up coming finals. This is the win that qualified Melville to make the four.

OSBORNE PARK (6) DEF WANNEROO (2) ............. 83/73

Ron Bates (skip), Hutchings, White , Sean Wright,---------------------25

A handy win for the Saints who played to keep the all important second place on the ladder. Gary Caffell's rink beat the well performed Clive Adams's rink to help secure the win.
Wanneroo Express didn't have enough steam to win this season defining game and will have the winter to see what they might do to improve on this years performance

DOUBLEVIEW POWERHOUSE (8) DEF MORLEY(0) ........00/00

The PowerHouse do the job on Morley and send them back to One White.
Some great games with two rinks almost getting that vital point to help them stay in the Premier League. Wayne Neilson's rink dropped a 7 with a couple of ends to go was the heartbreaker for Morley.
Dennis Katunarich played an absolute blinder and was at his brilliant best for the game against Peter Aungier's rink.

CAMBRIDGE (6.5 ) DEF KALAMUNDA (1.5 ) ..............74/67

B.Brandsma(skip) J. Rollnik, T. Nattalotto, H.Clifford ---------.----.---28

Kalamunda did enough to win promotion and will stay in the Premier League next season. Billy Brandsma and his rink would be the hero's for Kalamunda after their big win over the normally reliable rink of Ron Stockton While Mitch Biglan manged a draw against a good mate Trystan Smallacombe and his rink to sealthe promotion for Kalamunda.

It was a very good effort by two Leeming rinks to push the Cockburn Roosters all the way and make them earn their points. We say goodby to Leeming who can at least take some satifaction in having helped to determine the make up of the final four. Cockburn do what they always do, qualify to play in the finals once again and they will be hard to toss.
