Round 7 Premier division Click here to return to Pennant Scene
December
9, 2006.
Another great round of pennants with Morley beating the Wanneroo Express at
Wanneroo. It is another major upset and one wonders how many more of these upsets
will happen for the Morley boys.
Speaking with Wayne Neilson after the game he said that while Morley
would not win the Premiership this season, they would give plenty of cheek and
would be having a go each week and are around where they expected to be at this
stage of the season and that they also deserved to be in the Premier League because
they won the right to be there.
Sherro says you can't argue with that !!
The PowerHouse pour on the pressure and take third spot on the ladder and
see the Magic wilt. After a great start the Magic have lost their past three
games and next week play the upsetters of the Premier League, Morley at Morley,
next week.
The Bedford Bulls are doing everything right and the win against Cockburn was
very good and confirms that they will have to be included in everyone's calculations
for a Premiership chance. Cockburn almost look dead and buried with only one
win from 7 games. Sherro won't say they can't make the four but by gee theyhad
better get a wriggle on from here on.
AHH !! Osborne Park Saints are my sort of team as they cruise into second place
on the ladder. After the long trip up the hill and collecting all the points
they found the trip down the hill even better with a bag full of points. This
is the win they had to have, to stumble here would have got the gossip started.
Kalamunda where are you when I need you ?? After last week you should have been
favourites for this game. Oh well lets see what happens next week against Leeming
The Cambridge Knights are back into the fray with a whopping size win against
Leeming who completely collapsed to lose by 42 shots.
The first time Cambridge have collected all the points for some time and will
be on top of the world after this game

BEDFORD (6.5) DEF COCKBURN

Bedford overcome Cockburn at Cockburn in extremely windy conditions. The
draw worked out very well for Bedford

The story of this game was the brilliant combination off the back, that
of Lance Strahan and Daniel Wood. Lance played some telling conversions
and was backed up by a very good Wood. Peter Healy did well in the leading
department while Greg Hill had a quite day for a player of his ability.
Up until the 8th end it was close with Lance leading 5/4 and this is where
they said goodby to Joe Galpio and his rink as they shot away to lead 19/6
on the 16th end, finally winning 22/11.
Lance won 11 ends to 10

The
Jones Boy and his merry band are one heck of a hard rink to beat and with
the help of his team mates shut out Steve Srhoy who has been the shining
light for the Roosters this season.
The rink led 8/3 on the 7th end then extended that to 16/5 by the 12th end.
With a match winning lead they went on to record an easy win 22/14.
The Jones Boy Bedford (pictured) snags another great shot in
the big game down at Cockburn today
Jones Boy won 13 ends to 8
Best for Bedford was Skipper The Jones Boy
Best for Cockburn was skipper Steve Srhoy

Didn't get the story for this game but it was a dream draw with two of
the best skippers in town locking horns in a do or die contest to see
it ending in a draw was an indication of how tough a game it was .
Pieter led 7/1 after the 5th end and Russell came back hard to hit the
front with 10/7 on the 11th end. From here on it was anyones game with
Pieter's rink getting away again to lead 17/10 on the 15th end.
However Russell and his rink wouldn' go away and came back hard to hit the
front yet again leading 19/17 and seemingly to win the game but it was not
too be as Pieter and his rink in a last ditch effort won a shot on each of
the last two ends to draw the game.
Pieter Harris won 10 ends Russell Hughes won 11 ends
S.Bainbridge
(skip), B. Gartrell, S.Rushforth, K.Burke-------------.--16
D. Brown (Skip), G. Carberry, J. Ravilich, P. Novak---------------------25
The long awaited good form from Daniel Brown finally surfaced as he single handedly
destroyed the undefeated Stu Bainbridge's rink. The Bedford boys were very kind
in their praise of his performance and saying they had the bowls there
on several occasionions, but it was Dan the man who altered the setup.
The game was pretty close up till the 10th end where the scores were tied and
it was from here on that Dan said " wish me luck as
you wave me goodbye, here we go cheerio, were on our way" as they shot away to lead 21/11and finished
the game off with a very handy win and bringing to a halt the unbeaten run of
Stu and his team who had won 6 games straight.

R.Butler (skip) ,Bomber Gearing, J. Terrell, M.

Another good win by Kyle McIlroy to help set up the win for the Powerhouse
against Rhett Butler in a hard fought game. It was tight and tense for the
first 10 ends where the score was 10/11 and from here it was the beginning
of the end for Rhett Butler and his rink where the score was 17/10 for Kyle.
the score from then on was 17/11, 17/13, 20/13, 20/16. So it was still close
on the 18th end. Well Kyle and his rink scooted away to win 25/16
Kyle McIlroy won 13 ends to Rhett Butler 8
L Thorn, J Slavich, D Slavich, M. Mitchell -------------------------------27
Jon Sharp (skip), Steve Hughes, Roger Barns, John
Birch----.--------.12
Great
shot Prickles. Brilliant shot Lindsay. Top bowl Prickles, magic Lindsay. How
did he do that!! What a shot!! Oh no not again!!
That was all everyone heard from the start of the game till the 10th end
where the score was 16/0 as Lindsay Thorne put on a spectacular display
of bowls and could do no wrong today to keep Jon Sharp and his boys
in check.
Linday Thorn Doubleview (pictured) plenty to smile about today after a brilliant
game and a Powerhouse victory.
The score was 18/2 on the 13th end and from there it went to 27/6.
This was the rink that set up this most important win for the Powerhouse.
It seems that the rink is well and truly back in business and has played
a major role in lifting the club into the four.
John Slavich also played extremely well in this game, that was the only feedback
I got for the game..
Prickles won 15 ends Jon Sharp won 6 ends
D Katunarich, A Delaporte, R Dempsey, J Bausor -----------------------18
Cam Girvan (skip), John Trewhella, R. Kennedy, J. Andrew....---.--....16
As close as I was to this game I didn't see much of it except to say it was
a far better game than the one I was watching.
It was touch and go right throughout the match as to who would win this
game. The score
was never separated by more than two shots except on the 10th end where a
4 was the diff.
The game went right to the wire to be 16/16 on the 20th end
D. Katunarich won 10 ends Cameron Girvan won 11
Best players were
Ross Dempsey playing as second for the Powerhouse
John Andrew playing lead for the Magic
R Ball,(skip) B Urquhart, C Slavich, W
Langdon-------------------.-----15
A. Provost (skip), Doc Oakley, Kiran
Cousins, S. Knott ......----.. ...-......29
When I arrived to see the game and looked out the window to see that the unbeaten
rink of Anthony Provost had drawn Robbie Ball and Sherro thought you little ripper.
What a game this will be, two Legends of the game, Doc Oakley and Robbie Ball.
With two time State Singles winner Anthony Provost and Bruce Urquhart.
Hmm could Robbie's rink give this undefeated rink a go? Maybe yes.
It was very windy and the green was running at a good speed so it was difficult
for the players.
The game started out with A.P jumping to a 6/0 lead after 5 ends. The leaders
were having no influence on the game. Doc Oakley and the 'Ant' were doing
the damage.
The lead shot out to be 16/5 at the 11th end with Doc Oakley in charge as the
third.
Robbie Ball was playing to a losing head with the front three players in his
rink having an off day.
It was a one sided contest and would have to say it was not Premier league standard
today from the Powerhouse players. Robbie Ball the exception for the rink. His
rink had lost their previous two games and I think they will lose a few more
if their is no improvement.
The score advanced to 24/8 with Kiran Cousins, Doc Oakley and the 'Ant' playing
well to give the club a chance to win the aggregate.
------------------------
------------------L/R: Doc Oakley, Bruce Urquhart and Shane
Knott.
This pic tells the state of
play as the good Doc Oakley appears uninterested, Bruce mulling over the head
and Shane Knott not interested either. Well that might be the impression
this pic might indicate because the Magic rink had a strangle hold on this
contest . But of course we know these players were vitally interested and
a picture might not always tell us the true story .
Leaders: Charles Slavich and Shane Knott were clearly below their best today
Seconds: Kiran Cousins played a good game today
and certainly did his part in this game where as Winton Langdon had a very
quite game today.
Thirds: Doc Oakley showed that an 18 month lay off
hasn't affected his game and played a very good game giving great support
from the thirds position. Bruce Urquhart was definetly out of sorts today
and had no impact on the game.
Skips: Anthony Provost had a very good game playing
to a winning head but also met the challenges when he was down at the head.
Robbie Ball didn't set the world on fire, However he was rarely up on the
crossover but was by far his rinks best player.
Best players in order
3. Anthony Provost, 2. Doc Oakley, 1 Kiran Cousins.
CAMBRIDGE (2) DEF LEEMING
(6) .............
97/55
The size of this win is very surprising considering the win last week of
Leeming against the Saints.
T.Smallacombe(skip) N.Lewis,N.Bolton,,-B.Kiely----------..-----------25
W. Heldt (skip) B. West, G. Parker,
G. Strahan------ ---- ---- .-----------9
A positional change sees Brian Kiely back to leading, a job I have seen
him do well in the past mayhave had the desired effect if the score is
any indication to go by.
It seems that Trystan Smallacombe is well and truly back on track after
this easy win against Wayne Heldt's rink who appear to have fallen on hard
times after a great start to the season.
B.Katunarich (skip) M.McGann, W.Maher, D.Irvin.--------------------.22
D. Comrie (skip) A.Pryce, D.Nesbit, ? Caldow ----------------------------13
This a good win for the Katunarich led rink, When you consider that they
played the best rink at leeming and to come away handsome winners takes
some doing. Obviously Danny did not play to the great height of a week
ago, but we are aware that players cannot be at the top of their game all
the time.
R. Stockton (skip) T.Walsh,A.Heal,,
H.Christensen--- - -- ----------.-25
J. Conner (skip),G. Dobie,
T. Glendinning, G. Ford--------------------.18
Ron Stockton's rink continue their revival with another good win for
the Knights. The changes to the side seem to have worked a treat with
Tony Walsh taking on the important job of playing three and Aj Heal playing
two. Since these changes were implemented a couple of weeks ago, the
side hasn't looked back. This team was too good to be down for long.
They had a handsome win against Melville's Cameron Girvan. Then yesterday,
another solid win against Jimbo. Jimbo, picked up a soft 6 on the 9th
end to give Leeming a 5 shot lead. They played a long end and
no one from Cambridge could get close. The following end Leeming held
a solid 2 on another long end. Ron Stockton with his last bowl moved the
kitty 312mm to pick up a 3. This was the decisive moment in the game.
Leeming stayed on 16 for the next 9 ends.
S.Edmonds (skip) C.Lander,,

J. Richards (skip) G. Gould, R.
Ryder, J.Oliver -----------------------.---15
The Jack Breaker breaks thru for his second win for the season against a side
that was superb last week. We see that the positional change of the leader might
have done the trick as Greg Kane took on that role.
Jeff Richards's rink had a
great day last week but found the going tough today and will have to do more
if they are to have an impact on the competition
MORLEY(6). DEF
WANNEROO (2) ........84/63
Robbie Urquhart Morley ( pictured) Here we see Robbie
all smiles after he and his rinks enormous win against Geoff Ellis at Wanneroo
today.
Morley were missing three of their top players
for this game to day, John Armstrong, Gavin Grieve and Bruce Walter and that
makes this win all the more meritorious. I remember preseason that Morley
were beaten by Osborne Park who fielded about three of its top players for
the game and belted Morley. Since that fateful day
we have seen the club take up the responsibilty to make themselves more competitive
and we are seeing the results emerging.
I guess that if Morley lose next week it will be called an upset loss!!
R. Urquhart (skip), J. Heiden, B. Driscoll,
A. Elmer --------------------.30
Geoff Ellis (skip), Ron Bates, Barry Parmenter, Sean Wright---.-------15
In our review Sherro did ask what temperature would Rob and his rink be at today,
Well they were red hot. Down 0/11 against Geoff Ellis is not the score to be
if you want to win the game. The good news for he and Morley is they came up
to win 30/15. That is some sort of comeback in anyones book. Well done Morley.
P.

Morley's best rink and they are winners again and are now 5/2 + 14. It is
not an easy place to play at Wanneroo especially on the top green, while
it seems that old times are returning for the Wannero Wizard as they have
now lost three in a row.
Alan Haley (skip), M. Robinson, M.
Manning, B. Urquhart --------------.11
Stein Davies (skip), Ted.Alden, Murray Hulbert,
Derrick Griffin---...---23
Alan Haley is an unbeaten skipper in One Blue and was promoted to take the
place of the injured John Armstrong and it would be interesting to see what
his thoughts are coming into the Premier League and skipping in his first
ever game.
Stein Davies is one tough hombre and very hard to beat with great support
from the other members of the rink has continued on with another win.
W. Neilson (skip) ,? Holland, ? ford, Cobby --------------------------23
Neville Stevens (skip), John Carter, Ken Boswell,
Reg Humphryson--.25
Wayne Neilson's rink had to put in a good performance to confirm that the
rink is the real deal. Well they have done very well to get as close as they
have.
leading 21/10 against the well performed rink of Neville Stevens is no
easy task to get that far in front. Well, they couldn't hang on as Neville
Stevens and his boys came storming home to snatch an unlikely victory from
that position to win 25/23.
Neville Stevens continues to get the best out of his rink and has now won
5/2 + 4
OSBORNE PARK (8) DEF
KALAMUNDA (0) ..........................96/63
This is the win that Osborne Park Saints had to have after last weeks surprise
loss to Leeming. Kalamunda certainly waisted last week effort and have
let themselves and the competition down with this huge loss .
Where to for the Saints as the crash their way into 2cnd place on the premiership
ladder. Their confidence would be fully restored to help them realise that
a premiership is a very real possibility.
Unless something dramatic happens for Kalamunda they will be playing One
White next season.
Bill Galloway (skip), Ian Payne.G. Nicol, P. Pendergast ............
.........25
N.Payne (skip) R.Eddy, T.Nattalotto,
F.Anderson----------------------.13
Bill Galloway copped a flogging last week not because the rink didn't
play well but because of the brilliant game of Danny Comrie.
Last week Neil Payne had a birthday with his huge win over Barry Gartrell.
It was fitting these two rinks should do battle and the result tells us
all we need to know.
Ian Payne played three against
Neil Payne so it is obvious it was Neil who was the one in pain.
J. Goddard (skip),Fred Di Giuseppe C. Guelfi, P. Maynard ..
..... ........28
B.Brandsma(skip) J. Rollnik, R.Hutchinson, L.Pewsey----------.------16
This game helped set up the victory for the the Saints, however the size
of John Goddards win is somewhat of a surprise but the win is not. It looks
like he and his rink are back to their correct form. Billy Brandsma has
been impressive playing as a skipper but
all skips do need the help of team mates.
Gary Caffell(skip),Wings Evans. G King, J Coleman....................
........19
N.Griffin (skip), M.Clancy, E.Martin,G. Carbines -----------------------.15
Without doubt this game was between the two best performed rinks of both
clubs, Gary Caffell has had only one loss while Neale has had two losses.
The result shows it was a tough encounter for both sides.
D. Trewhella (skip), Pat Caffell J. Tyrer, S. Wattleworth.....................24
M. Biglan (skip) G.Payne, B. Tie, N. Bruce -
------------------.-----------19
Good to see Daniel Trewhella and his rink continue on with the business
and the win tho small is a further indication of better things to come for
the rink
Mitch Biglan's rink will take some time to settle down as he gains the experience
to become a good skipper.
