Round 8 Premier division Click here to return to Pennant Scene

December 16, 2006.
There were two changes in the Wanneroo team, Simon Alden and Barry Parmenter were dropped to One Blue and Dekerk Bowen and Laurie Johnson came into the side and played very well for the Express while Bob Donovan made a successful return to the Bulls line up that had Lance Strahan missing due to attending a wedding for the second time in three weeks,

A top class game between the Bulls and the Express with the game settled on the last two ends where we saw The new rink of Daniel Wood, Greg Hill, Bob Donovan and Peter Healy delivering the winning bowls on end 83

Melville bring home the bacon with a solid game against Morley who fought tooth and nail to cause another upset. Anthony Provost and his rink maintained their unbeaten run with last bowl of the game victory.

Kalamunda and Leeming go bowl for bowl in a close game at Leeming and it is Kalamunda who prevail

Steve Srhoy stands in the way of the Saints to deny them victory with a demoralising win against the very well performed rink of Gary Caffell.

BEDFORD BULLS (6) DEF WANNEROO EXPRESS (2 ) ......80/77

---------------------
Daniel Wood (middle) with team mates Bob Donovan (left) and Peter Healy celebrating the win in his first game as skipper in the Premier League.

They said he couldn't make it and said he couldn't win, Sherro said he could possibly lose this game and suspected he would. He has played 7 games in the Premier league and skippers in his 8th game today.
Wow ! he is against the tough tough rink of Stein Davies who always give a contest and very hard to push aside.
Well who is the man ? None other than the man we have previously said is good.
DANIEL WOOD.

D. Wood  (skip), G.Hill,  B.Donovan,  P.Healy------------------------------22
Stein Davies (skip), Ted.Alden, Murray Hulbert, Derrick Griffin
---...---16

The game was a hard fought affair with Woody getting away to a handy start to lead 8 /4 on the 7th end and stretch it to 14/7 on 13th end. From here Stein and his boys tried hard but were only able to get ones on the next four ends. Woody and his rink put their foot on the gas to shoot away to to win a fiercly hard fought last 4 ends to ensure the Bulls won the aggregate.
------------------------Every one takes a good line on this end

--------------------------

L/R: Stein Davies, Ted Alden and Murray Hulbert examine the possibilties and are 4 down at the head with the aggregate in the balance on the 83rd end

Best player for Bedford was skipper Daneil Wood with Bob Donovan who played a ripper on his return to the team.

The Jones Boy (skip), C.Graybrook, Paul Hunter, V.Colley---------------20
Geoff Ellis (skip), Ron Bates, Sean Wright, L. Johnson -L. Johnson-----22

This was a great game to watch and the way it ebbed and flowed with all players contributing to their club's cause was fascinating. It is fair to say that each player did have their moment in this game. Probably the game was decided by the back half players who were oustanding in this game.

The game started out with Geoff Ellis and his rink getting away to great start and leading 8/1 after 5 ends. New leader Laurie Johnson was on top up to this point of the game and taking it right up to Vaughan Colley. Sean Wright was doing well for the Express.

The players are getting very interested in this bowl coming into the head from Geoff Ellis
-----------------------

L/R:Vaughan Colley, Ron Bates, Laurie Johnson. Sean Wright, Cliff Graybrook

After 11 ends had been completed The Jones Boy's rink were leading 14/11 and that was because of Vaughan Colley stepping up the pace and getting on top in his battle with Laurie Johnson. The rest of the rink, Paul Hunter and Cliff Graybrook followed suit and each player for the Bulls was in charge of his position.
From here on it was tough going and the score was 16/16 on the 16th end with both leaders breaking even and having a battle royal to establish supremacy. Seconds were evenly matched with Sean Wright playing as a two for the first time and showed plenty of promise in this position and Ron Bates playing three came into the game strongly with several top notch bowls and was having a real influence as to how the game might pan out. Up to this stage Cliff Graybrook still had more to say about the result overall on ends played.
The Jones Boy was going slightly better than State Coach and selector Geoff Ellis, both were playing very well..

In the frantic last 6 ends Vaughan Colley came home with a brilliant finish winning the majority of the ends while Geoff Ellis had the upper hand with a steady flow of telling bowls as did Ron Bates. to help snatch a very good win in a tough hard encounter. It was a classic Premier League game with plenty of pressure and top class bowls.

Leaders
Vaughan Colley won his dual after a slow start and finished brilliantly while Laurie Johnson can feel good about his contribution

Seconds
Paul Hunter and Sean Wright were about even up till the 10th end with both playing their part. The second half was no different

Thirds
Cliff Gray brook won the first half while Ron Bates won the second half and both players played many fantastic bowls for their side. Overall they would be both happy with their contribution in this titantic struggle to gain supremacy.

Skips
Both had influence over this game, In the first half the Jones Boy was a little unlucky with some of his shot play but things started to click from end six where he played many magic bowls, he had an impact on the game with several great bowls to support the goodwork of his team
Geoff Ellis also had plenty of impact and had several great drawshots, with some nice conversions, He still has what it takes to be hanging onto the last two bowls for Wanneroo ----over all they broke even with The Jones Boy having a touch more brilliance than Geoff.

This is by far the hardest 3.2.1 that I have had to decide for winning the car at the end of the year because of the great game that all players played.

3. 2. 1 to all players

C.Adams (skip), Derek Bowen, Gary Cox, Russ Bates, --------------------26
P.Harris (skip), N.Minchin,M. Lemos, Peter Hunter---------------------.-18

The game was won on the first 4 ends for Clive Adams when they led 11/1. For the next four ends Peiter Harris made some ground to be 7/12. As the game wore on Clive and his boys, who had Derek Bowen playing his first game in the Premier league playing three seemed to be looking at a huge win leading 18/8 on the 12th end.
Suddenly the game took a different turn with Bedford lifting their game and their score was 18/21 down on the 18th end and a chance to snare the game. Clive and his rink steadied and won the next three ends to win the game and almost the aggregate.

S.Bainbridge (skip), B. Gartrell,   S.Rushforth, K.Burke----------------.--22
Neville Stevens (skip), John Carter, Ken Boswell, Reg Humphryson----.16

A good game between these two rinks with Stu having lost one game and being the leading rink for the Bulls while Neville Stevens was the leading rink for the Wanneroo Express.
Bedford jumped out of the blocks and shot to 10/3 lead on the 9th end. from here the score was 15/10, 19/12, 20/14, 22/16.
The standard of play reached great heights in the closing stages of this game when the aggregate was on the line for both clubs. On the last end of this game almost every bowl was shot for either side with ulta close bowls in their endeavours to win the game. In the end with so much at stake with the aggregate in the balance it was Neville Stevens who steadied to play two great draw shots to a moved jack to almost get Wanneroo the aggregate.
Best player for Bedford was the third, Barry Gartrell who has had a great season so far

KALAMUNDA (6) DEF LEEMING (2) ............. 83/80

Neale Griffen returns to the winners list after a run of three succesive losses to set up this Kalmunda victory defeating Danny Comrie by 17 shots.
Billy Brandsma has also bounced back to snare a good win over Geoff Gould.
Wayne Heldt had a huge win against Neil Payne and it is hard to fathom out why Neil's rink is in the doldrums after seeing them play at Bedford recently.

MELVILLE MAGIC (6). DEF MORLEY (2) ........89/72

The Magic selector have reacted to the losses in their last three games with some changes to the Magic line up, John Trewhella playing in one Blue along with John Terrell while Colin Fleay and Bob Mitchell made their first appearance for some time in a Magic Shirt, Steve Hughes played two for Anthony Provost. and Bomber Gearing was not available.
This win was so important to Melville and will go someway toward restoring their confidence for them go onto better things from here.
Full credit to Morley on their effort and what a great game between the undefeated "Ant" Provost and Robbie "hollywood" Urquhart. Rob and his side of J. Heiden, Barry Driscoll and A. Elmer almost caused the first defeat for the Melville rink and were leading by 8/9 shots at one stage. The game was won on the last end of the game with the scores at 22/23 in favour of the Morley boys, however Melville had one shot in the head and with only one bowl to be played in the game, the Ant nailed the game by drawing the second shot with not a lot of room available to him to preserve their unbeaten run.

Cockburn (5) DEF OSBORNE PARK SAINTS (3) ..............79/71

Bowls can so unprdictable and who would have predicted that the well performed rink of Gary Caffell who have lost only one game for the season could turn in a game with a score line 7/32 down playing at Osborne Park.
Full credit to Steve Srhoy and what ever he does is never a surprise and he is still one of the best skippers in the Premier League, of course Steve didn't do it all by himself, Alan Petchell, Ivan "Super Glue" Jakovich and Silvio Vassallio were the other members of this rink to record a great win for Cockburn Roosters.
After this win Cockburn have dropped to second last on the premiership ladder. Never have the Roosters occupied that position

The Saints did well to win on the other three rinks and the big result for them was the contimued form of Daniel Trewhella who toppled the gun rink of Russell Hughes and that is never an easy task at the best of times.
