R. Hughes won 13 ends, Hugh McKay won 8 ends the game finished at 6.09 PM

A great performance by skipper Russell Hughes was the difference between the two sides in the final today. This was a high standard game played in cold miserable and windy conditions. There were no passengers and all players contributed to the contest.
The first five ends were about even after Hugh McKay had led 5-1. From there on no matter how well Hugh or his side played, and they did play so well, having their bowls surrounding the jack often only to see Russell change the the head, and always to advantage. It was around the middle stages when the front three Melville players were on top in their position that it was heart breaking for them to see what Russell was doing to their great bowls.
The leads were having a huge battle with John Andrew bowling better than Rob Bowron at this stage, while Bob Connell was doing a great job against Danny Penman, Chris Jones had plenty of good drawshot bowls and was playing very well. this was up to the 12th end
It was around the 12th end onward that Gary Carberry started to undo whatever good bowls that the Melville boys had while Rob Bowron started to get his bowls extremely close consistently

Rob Bowron got on top while Danny Penman playing as a second was very consistent also and Gary Carberry hit a purple patch with plenty of telling bowls that kept the pressure on.

At 19-6 the game took another turn to see The Melville boys pick up a big five, 2 and a 1. The five came after a brilliant end from the Hughes front three
And a terrific Chris Jones bowl trailed the jack back. This was the first time that Russell could not save the end. There was a small glimmer of hope for a win but it was not to be for Hugh and his boys

Overall the front end battles were around even, but the Hughes backend made far more conversions than the Hugh McKay's backend and this was the telling factor in a high standard game

Play of the game on the 8th end, Russel three down, drives two out, then trails the jack 16 inches to make 4 shots. for a 7 shot turn around.

THE SEMI-FINALS

D. Opie(skip), J. Rainoldi, T. Simpson, Chris McMahon 19-18
What A game!! last years R/U were on the ropes when I arrived at the game with the score 13-3 in favour of R. Hughes. There was a stoppage in play due to the weather for around 1 hour. When play resumed Dave Opie and his boys started a huge fightback to claw their way back into the game, The standard was down due the the very windy conditions but none the less there were plenty of quality bowls played.
The man of the match was the outstanding David Opie, he responded to the pressure as only he seems to be able to. As they drew close and closer toward the lead he saved his side on many occasions. Chris McMahon started to win the leaders battle while Jarrad Rainoldi played a very solid game with some outstanding draw shots. They hit the front to lead 18-17 with one end to play, however they had to contend with the brilliant Russell Hughes who saved his side on the last end when he drew shot after being 3 down. The extra end saw heaps of pressure and really top shelf bowls from all players. Russell was down after Travis Simpson who was under enormous pressure had drawn the shot, with his first bowl did nothing, falling short but he drew a toucher with his last to win a heart stopper.

G. Gould Leeming (skip) D. Comrie B. Edwards A Pryce 27-12
This game was a good game with plenty of close bowls but a telling factor was Hugh McKay and his rink were able to convert when in trouble while the Leeming boys were not able to do the same. They were alway close to doing so without acheiving a result.
Still it is a great effort to make it to the semi-finals and gives the rink something to build on for next year.

Day 3 At Cambridge
Final
J.Cottier b M.Elsegood 22-16

This was a very good standard considering that it was third division and was very close most of the way with the Mt Lawley boys getting away toward the end of the agme.
