L/R: Jon Sharp, Robbie Ball, Pat Buller, Ross Dempsey.
The State Fours Final was won By R. Ball
(skip), J. Sharp, R. Dempsey, P. Buller in a brilliant display of lawn
bowls defeating D. Opie(skip), J. Rainoldi, T. Simpson,
Chris McMahon. Comp 4........ 27/11
You would have to go a long way to see a better display of teamwork and skill
that was on display this afternoon.
Robbie Ball and his rink had survived some exciting and very close games on their
way thru to the final winning two games against quality oppostition by one shot
each time (P. Harris,R. Hughes), and a two shot win (T. Cocodis) in the section
play.
Pat "Bullseye" Buller set the scene in the early part of the final with an
outstanding leaders game where he was rarely off the jack in the first seven
ends with his two bowls. When he faded slightly, enter Ross "Demo" Dempsey
who fired with a fantastic seconds game and was rarely more than a yard away,
several ends from Demo were centimetre perfect ( thanks Dennis Commeti).
Jon Sharp was very good and a feature of his game being that he was very rarely
short, hardly wasting a bowl and a very good backup. Robbie Ball was at his
best with a telling game, his drawshot was supreme, if he was in trouble he
converted, I think Robbie probably could not play much better than he did,
and as I have always maintained, at his best he is the best.
The David Opie led rink (State Triples winners) were outclassed and were unable
to match it with Robbie Ball, the score at one stage being 23/4, no matter
how hard they tried they could not make any impact on the game against brilliant
opponents.
On most occasions on the crossover David Opie was down at the head and if he
was up he would soon be down again after Robbie Ball had bowled. However David
Opie showed what he is made of and is a class act.
Congratulations to Robbie Ball and his boys on their magnificent display.

Comp 4....19
DEFEATED
M. Crameri(skip), J.Wilkins, R. Quinn, B. Calthorpe. Cunderdin.....18
This game seemed all over bar the shouting as David Opie was leading last years
runner up 16/5 at around the halfway mark and his team mates were doing their
thing to keep the pressure on. From here the game took a big turn around with
the Cunderdin boys playing extremely well and Silky Wilkins lifting his rating
with a superb leaders game and the other team members putting plenty of close
bowls on or around the jack.
Davids team were getting beaten to the punch but were still bowling well.
The pressure kept building with Dave saving his side on many occassions to keep
the Cunderdin boys at bay however they were relentless and when it came to end
21 the score was 18/18.
What a belter of a last end, Cunderdin held the shot from Silky Wilkins
second
bowl till the last bowl from Maurice Crameri who drew a ripper right alond side
the jack. That forced David Opie in a more attacking shot and so with the last
bowl of the game David picked up the jack with correct weight to win a thrilling
last end and game. Boy oh boy!! David sure knows how to play under extreme
pressure.
PICTURED L/R: Silky Wilkins Brian Calthorpe
The dissapointment was obvious for the Cunderdin boys to have come from so far
behind and hold game for all of the last end to see it snatched away with the
last bowl of the game. However they are a terrific side and could easily go one
better next year..

VERSUS
N. Ball(skip), B. Ball, D.Wood, G. Manuel. Kardinya.........9
Are Robbie and Norm related is the question I was asked-- yes they
are --cousins apparently.
This was a good standard game with plenty of close bowls and the score doesn't
quite reflect how well Norm Ball and his rink played. In fact Norm Ball played
very well, and sure is a very good skipper.
What was costly for the Kardinya boys was losing a couple of three's
I was not able to get the scorecard to see where it was won and lost.

Many thanks to Bruce Challen BowlsWA for
these results.

The State Fours gets under way 29th April and we have
plenty of crackerJack combinations. Who will win is to hard to say. last
years winners (18 months
ago) Winton Langdon Jim Bausor, Stan Curtis and Bruce Weir have a tough
section to get thru, The runner up Silky Wilkins has a new skipper, Maurice
Crameri is in charge and that still makes them still very hard to beat.
There are several highlite game in the sections. The Krajancic Brothers go
head to head, John Goddard and Steve Srhoy renew acquaintances, Langdon Versus
Harris, Davies Versus Hughes and so the list goes on and on. Should be a great
series with plenty of upsets and heartache, and of course Sherro will be there
soaking it all up!!

The task to select a winner here is very hard, J. McElroy
made it to the last 8 in the last state 4's and enjoys a very good reputation.
Neil Payne has a solid side almost all are Payne's.
Derek Bowen is not out of
this either. Have to go for the country side.
Winner: N. Payne(skip), B. Brandsma, G. Payne, R.Payne.

not surprise

A clash of brothers Krajancic, and from memory it is
Tony who has the most wins when they have met previously. Both have won promotions
for their respective clubs this season. Tony also recently won the Stirling
Easter carnival.
In between the brothers stands Alan Davis who had a very good season in pennants
and it would not surprise to see him come out a winner here.
I think Marko has more tricks up his sleeve and will win the section.

How hard does it get. We see Trystan Smallacombe lining up with his former team
mates from Kalamunda. ( rumours are rife that he could play there next season)
Danny Comrie is very hard to beat, but I don't know who his team mates are apart
from Gary Ford, think you have a hard task here Danny
Doug Eaton is a terrific player but I can't see him causing an upset here, While
Keith Cannon, who is from the same club as Trystan has a good rink, I have to
go for Trystan Smallacombe
Winner: T.Smallacombe(skip), N. Griffin, M. Biglin, B. Tie.

John Lethleen is a very good skipper, along with W.
McIlveen who was a recent
runner up in the AEG carnival. Ken. Sutcliffe is always
busy and can produce a good game. I dont know much about Shane Knott so I cant
say anything about him, only that he is a young fellah and is in the development
squad.
Win Ferris was a good player, and he might still be one, with Don Evans leading
for him a win is possible
Winner: J. Lethlean(skip), W. McIlveen, B. Lethlean, R.
McIlveen. Rockingham

Well, we have the best at the very end in section 20.
WOW!! looky looky, Wings Evans has a top flight line up. Bruce Urquhart has
three of the best players in W.A in front of him, Sure wish I had a rink
like that.
Alan Hogarth has had a very good season in pennants and if he gets going
he will make life difficult.
And if that is not enough, Wayne Heldt with
son Blake along with the Trewhella boys who won the Champion of Club Champion
fours last week
just make this section all the harder to win.
This is close to the best and hardest section in the event
AND THE WINNER WILL BE???.......
Winner: W. Heldt(skip), J. Trewhella, B. Heldt, M. Trewhella.
