What can I say!!!, those who were at the finals will remember them
for sometime to come. The win of Steve Srhoy and Dan Penman , who came from
a hopeless position and
never looking likely to win was just something special. It was a Goldstar performance
Up against the best pairs combination that I have seen in my time,
Steve took them on and almost played a lone hand in a scintillating exhibition
of draw bowling which was under pressure on most occasions, and in very windy
conditions, not forgetting the brilliant drives that saved the day on so many
occasions.
Steve will never forget this impossible victory and his marvelous performance,
Sherro won't either.
John Goddard played a brilliant game also and he is possibly the best player
in W.A. He has command of any shot that has to be played in any situation.
One
aspect of his play is that he is so good in very windy conditions, John Goddard
is an out and out champion player.
Gary Caffell is one heck of a good player, and played a tremendous game today.
He has a terrific temperament and it really showed in this final just how
good he is when he is under the pump or when there is a difficult situation
at hand. Gary you were sooooo good in this great game.
Dan Penman did struggle in this game due to the very windy conditions, however
he also did some good work thru the game. Experience will make Dan a stronger
player in the future. In his earlier games he was a terrific contributor
In the final John Goddard/Gary Caffell playing Steve Srhoy/ Dan Penman,
and after 5 ends John Goddard led 9/0. They were playing better and deserved
that lead.
Things swung around score wise, and by the 9th end john led 10/7.
Up to this point of time Steve Srhoy was playing a lone hand as Dan Penman
just could not come to grips playing into the very strong wind , where as John
in particular, and Gary did not know there was any wind present the way they
were playing.
At the conclusion of the 14th end John Goddard led 19/9 and he and Gary were
sensational. However Steve Srhoy also was brilliant, considering that
Dan was struggling , Steve's effort kept their hope alive, he drew and
drove and drew either hand, he also took far more grass than any player out
there and his bowl would find its way to the jack very often.
From the 15th end onward Steve Shroy dominated the game even tho J.G and G.C
continued to play ever so well, in fact they were just so, so good.
There were so many ends killed by Steve and Dan in an effort to keep their
hopes alive, that people in attendance started to leave, thinking that he was
on mission impossible
and
still had
no chance.
At the conclusion of 18th end the score was 22/14 in favour of John and Gary.
More dead ends from Steve and Dan
End 20 saw the score 22/19 and a small scent of victory for Steve. The stage
was set for a magnificent finish. Dan's first bowl was 4 inches behind the
jack and was his best bowl into the wind for the game. Gary's first bowl wasn't
good but
his second was a ripper landing on the jack to get the shot.
Steve drove the jack into the ditch near the boundary peg, Dan drew two good
bowls but Gary drew second shot, John drew perfect weight but finished outside
the peg, Steve
drove
Gary's
bowl off the green, John's next bowl went into the ditch, three shots to Steve
and Dan, 22/22 and now an extra end.
What a brilliant last end John and Gary held shot for most of the last end,
Dan played a couple of pearlers without result Steve played the last bowl of
the game and was one down. Here we go, can he do it, YES!! Steve draws the
shot smack on the jack and wins an incredible victory.
It is not often we see a player win a game in such circumstances, today Steve
Srhoy was sensational.
The greens at Morley were fanatasic and credit to the greenkeeper, Wayne Neilson

SEMI-FINALS
Lance Strahan/Chilli Illich versus John Goddard/
Gary Caffell
Last years State Pairs finalists meet in the semi-finals. The game was a ripper
with Lance leading 8/3 after 7 ends. The game seemed to be in Lance's keeping
because he and Chilli were on top and doing it very well.
Things were nip and tuck up to the 14th end with Lance and Chilli leading 12/9.
Lance in particular was playing a magnificent game, and John Goddard was making
his presence felt.
From this end on John and Gary scored 1,5,2,-- to win the game. 17/12
After the game both John and Gary said that they were very lucky to have made
the final considering the Houdini act they had to perform to win their last
two
games.

SEMI-FINALS
Jon Sharp/Adrian Lee versus Steve
Srhoy/ Dan Penman.
A high standard game, great leading from Adrian Lee and Dan Penman, followed
by an outstanding clash between the two skippers who went hard at it, Jon and
Steve rarely wasted a bowl between them, weight control was magic.
It was tight
all the way with the biggest margin 3 shots. Jon Sharp's driving was superb,
his draw
shot
magnificent,
Steve likewise. The leaders set the tone for the game and it was the best game
for tight, hard and close bowls that you could wish to see.
The last end saw Steve 12/13 down and up
one shot up at the head and with hardly any room to draw another shot, with
the last bowl of the game he did just that, to win 14/13
Both skippers were 9 out of ten for the game they played today

POWERFUL COMBINATIONS STILL IN CONTENTION
