FINAL
P.Harris(sk) T. Smallacombe (comp)DEFR.Bresland K.
Pride (SP) 21/15
After four days of competition it came
down to the composite team of P.Harris/T.Smallacombe versus the South Perth
combo of Ross Bresland and Ken Pride to do the business of winning the State
Pairs Championship.
The game started out with the Sth Perth pair showing they were not worried
about the the big occasion or who their illustrious opponents were.
Ken Pride who has done so well in One White pennants certainly showed the
way in the first six ends beating Trystan Smallacombe to the punch. The first
5 ends were hard going for both sides with Pieter Harris leading 4/1 and
after a handy pickup of three shots for the South Perth pair The score was
4/4
on the 6th end.
Trystan Smallacombe suddenly found his range to
be the dominant leader over the next 6 ends to help create a buffer
between the sides. Both skips had their moments in the first 12 ends and
there was not much between them to this point.
The battle of the leads was the determining factor, who landed closest to
the jack, would on most occasions win the end. Ken Pride was playing
very well as leader but Trystan was just that bit better overall.
The 13th end saw the score at 13/6 for P.H. however they were getting a
run for the money as the score crept up to 13/9 and the Sth Perth boys still
had a chance to win the game and were not going to go away.
Ross Bresland played some rippers but unfortunately he played too many short
bowls or he had the correct weight but played narrow bowls when a good bowl
was needed.
Pieter Harris was good when there was trouble in the camp,
when needed he responded with a couple of big bowls to keep their momentum
going. It
would be fair to say That Pieter Harris was going better than Ross Bresland.
The game drifted to the last end with the Sth Perth pair needing a miracle
to draw being 13/21 down.
The game was pretty good taking into account that the wind appeared to be
stronger than the previous day. It is fair to say it was a bit of a tease
for the spectators wondering if Ross and Ken could some how win the game
because they were never far behind until the last few ends.
We can remember
last years State pairs final where many left the game at Morley because
Steve Srhoy was so far behind yet he got up to win.
The Standout player was Trystan Smallacombe who won the all important battle
up front, but Ken Pride was not far behind, Ken should be proud of his performance
and showed he can go with the best of them.
Pieter Harris done what was required of him and played
very well
Ross Bresland was a good competitor also had many fine moments in the game
and this experience will stand him in good stead for the future

SEMI-FINAL
R.Bresland
Ken Pride (SP) DEF P. Aungier(sk) A. Barron (Morley) 22/10
This game was somewhat of a let down considering
the great performance from Peter Aungier and Allan Barron who were unstoppable
the day before. The score really blew right out early in the game and was
cut and dried well before the end.
None the less
it was a great performance to make it to the semi-finals and probably explains
why the Peter Aungier and his rink have done so well in the Premier league
P.Harris(sk) T. Smallacombe (comp)DEFC.Adams(sk)
S. Shaw (comp) 18/9
This game was also almost over very early in the
piece with Pieter Harris playing superbly and in brilliant touch throughout
the game. His drawshot was magnificent and he never missed any running shot
when required to play them.
Shane Shaw played a very good game and gave his side every chance with many
very close bowls, but we would see Pieter Harris get inside them or on occasions
T.S would do so as well.
Trystan Smallacombe was good and the tussle between he and
Shane was a beauty.
The Wanneroo Wizard played some good bowls during the game but he was unable
to convert with many of his running shots tho they were close and in the
target area they had no impact.
The score was a true indication of who
played best.
