MANY THANKS TO BRUCE CHALLEN
BOWLS WA WHO PROVIDED THESE RESULTS
Bruce you were magnificent as usual and
many thanks for your help
WINNER ANTHONY PROVOST DEF DANIEL
TREWHELLA 25/23
All bowlers and spectators who were at Yokine today were treated to
one of the best days that Bowls could provide to any enthusiast or observer
The
final was just something special, and for Sherro he would have this game right
up there with the best of the best. (Sherro's
best is the Ross Dempsey V Keith Guelfi final 1996, this game had amazing similarities)
Both players had the eye of the tiger and were not going to be denied victory.
Anthony
is the new Bert Sharp of bowls in the West-- he waits for no one in his determination
to get on with the game, and Sherro loves that aspect.
Anthony appears to have his shot worked
out before he picks up his bowl, and straight into it. Daniel Trewhella is
about half a second slower to get his bowl away than Anthony. This game was
the fastest I have ever seen, no hold ups and both boys eager to get on with
it.
Anthony Provost Sportsmans (pictured) is all smiles
as he accepts the winners cheque after a brilliant
game today
Daniel Trewhella has an attacking flair that helped to make this game a great
spectacle. If this is the style of game that the young brigade are going to
provide for
the
future, then people will love to come and watch them play.
By gee the game was a cracker right from the start, both players draw shot
power was excellent. Many ends were decided by small margins or conversions.
After
ten ends the score was 10/10, from here it was Anthony Provost who seemed to
have the edge and led 17/12 on the 16th end by having better consistency.
With the game in the balance and the likely hood of losing, Daniel Trewhella
had to dig deep to come up with some huge bowls to beat the ultra close bowls
of Anthony Provost. Please believe me when I say ultra close.
Daniel Trewhella Osborne Park (pictured with Trevor
Barron BowlsWA President ) Played a marvelous attacking game today and
bought the game of bowls alive throughout today's games.
The
19th end saw Daniel produce a backbreaker, two down and the shot bowls were
so close to the jack, he produced the shot of the game to trail the jack
into or very near the ditch and managed to pick up a big big four.
Oh Boy!!!! sooooooooooooooo now we see that Daniel in command leading 19/17
and I must say that these two players were drawing so well that many a head
was
just one metre wide at worst.
O.K we were not to know at this stage, but only 8
ends were to be played from here on, and the large crowd was enthralled with
this gripping contest, where both players who were drawing so well and were
prepared to go for their shots.and
on most occasions do some damage with their bowls to the head. To predict
a winner from here was only a guess.
The Major difference in the shot play of both players was Anthony was a draw/drive
and Daniel used a variety of weighted bowls into the head.
Well, we have a game on our hands and it is all or nothing for both players
The standard was as good as it can get with both players trying
to outdraw bowls that were within 1 foot or less of the jack, and succeeding
Well at the end of the day Daniel could not hold Anthony out, the score
was 23/24 in favour of The Ant, and as good as Daniel was, it was Anthony who
played the right bowls and won one of the most memorable games I have seen
THE SEMI-FINALS
ANTHONY PROVOST DEF BARRY ELLIS 25/18
The semi-finals were as good as they could be with all games going down to
the wire.
The semi between Anthony Provost and Barry Elliss (Barry who?) was a great
game to watch with Anthony winning 25/18. Barry Ellis is from the Mt Pleasant
Bowling club and started bowling in 2000, he is 59 years of age.
Barry
who won the novice singles and has a club pairs to his credits so far, entered
the State Singles so he could play against the
best players. Before the tournament started he gave his son a call and said
don't come to watch on the weekend, come on Monday and watch.
Well who would
have thought an unknown player from the Mt Pleasant second division red side
would be lining up to have a crack at the brilliant young Anthony Provost in
the semi-final.
Barry the way you responded to the pressure, and there was plenty of that throughout
the game you did yourself proud today and showed
you have the temperament and skill to go on with things after such a display.
They won't be asking Barry Who any more I wouldn't think.
Anthony got on top toward the end of the game and had to dig pretty
deep to
win this
encounter against Barry Ellis..
Well done Barry
Barry Elliss Mt Pleasant (pictured above ) played a magnificent
game in the semi-final
DANIEL TREWHELLA DEF ROSS
DEMPSEY 25/24
The
crowd certainly got their monies worth watching Daniel Trewhella playing against
a fantastic never say die Ross Dempsey, in yet another crowd pleaser that went
right down to the wire. Daniel has that great all round game and this helped
him overcome Ross who could have just as easily won this game when three down
on the last end attempted to trial the jack to his back bowl for two shots
and game, getting the edge instead of full to lose the game.
Daniel Trewhella was on fire throughout the game and survived many a crisis with
his all round shot play. His draw shot is of the highest order and had the
ability to draw them when the chips were down.
Ross Dempsey Doubleview (pictured) has done exceptionally
well this season reaching the semi-final of the Victoria Park Masters singles
and also playing
in the
final
of the Sorrento
Master singles losing to Trystan Smallacombe.
You always get a great game
from Ross, well done
THE QUARTER-FINALS
BARRY ELLISS DEF ROBERT
TROW 21/17
The quarter final between Rob Trow and Barry Elliss was a ripper and it again
emphasizes that the game ain't over till the last bowl has been bowled
Rob Trow was getting done and looked like being home very early because he
was 10/2 down and needing for something to happen. Well I guess that you don't
make the quarters if you can't bowl and we know that Rob certainly can. Rob
started to make inroads
into making up ground on the scoreboard 11/8, then fell away again having to
regroup from 16/8 down to hit the front 17/16 in an amazing comeback and a
win now possible.
Barry picked up a 3 and a 2 to win the game 21/17
Great effort from Robert Trow to almost get there. Well done Rob.
ROSS DEMPSEY DEF RUSSELL
HUGHES 21/19
This was an amazing game because Russell Hughes who was the defending
Champion was 6/17 down on the 16th end and it was looking like a humiliating
loss coming
up for him. Well Sherro said on the radio that it was impossible for even a
great player such as Russell is to win from this position. Think again !!
Looking at the scorecard he was 8/17, 10/17, 11/17, 13/17, 14/17 14/20, 15/20,18/20,19/20
The last end was an outstanding end and tested the temperament of both players.
Ross outdrew Russell's first bowl which was 9 inches jack hi. Under incredible
pressure Rus was a little long with his second, Ross drew another. All expected
Rus to drive with his third, but no he elected to draw and did so without success.
Ross played his third with no effect.
Surely now Russell would drive but again he elected to draw with a little over
and bingo!! he grabbed the jack and
sat along side it about 3 inches away and was holding game. How would you like
to be in Ross Dempsey's shoes. He has the last bowl and there is so little
room to draw, but Ross does the impossible and drew shot to win a heart stopper.
Russell Hughes as defending Champion left us with no doubt that tho he is now
no longer the champ, he is a champion bowler who refused to give in. Great
stuff Russell.
DANIEL TREWHELLA DEF JOHN
GODDARD 21/19
Another game that will be remembered The two club
mates up against one and other and both at the top of their game. John flew
out of the blocks to
lead 8/1
and he was playing up to his normal standard and appeared to have Daniel's
measure, however Daniel was not fazed and played the game with a mixture of
great upshots
and draw power to come from 1/8 down to lead 14/10 which is
a great effort especially against John Goddard John got back into stride to
level
the
game 15/15 then it got to 18/18 and anyone's game. The standard was very high
with both players showing just how good they are level again at 19/19.
Daniel
won the last end and game 21/19.
To watch a game of this standard is great for the spectators and is what makes
it such a great game to play.
ANTHONY PROVOST DEF PETER BOWDEN 21/19
I have to keep saying it!! another great game and Peter Bowden put in
a mighty effort to go down very narrowly. I wasn't able to see much of this
game unfortunetly but
we are all aware of the capabilities of Peter Bowden who has a good record
as a singles player over the years and to see him almost beat Anthony Provost
would be no surprise. The scorecard is not marked correctly and very hard to
follow.
Well done Peter and
you might go even better in the next State Singles
