State Singles 2007

FINALS TUESDAY 30-1-07
State Singles 2007
At OSBORNE PARK

Once again bowls followers have been treated to another wonderful day of Bowls in the semi-finals and the big one, the State Singles Final
In the games played, yesterday One game was decided by a single shot on the second last bowl. Another game was won by two shots in a game that shared a rating of 9.5 with the first game mentioned.
Today The semi final was decided by a single shot also. The word was it was a cracker of a game. While the other semi- final was a very tough game .

Games like this are not often seen and Sherro would say you wouldn't see better games played any anywhere in the world. It shows we have some extremely talented players who could do well and I expect to see some of them do extremely well in Kyle McIlroys PBA circuit to start shortly.

STATE SINGLES FINAL 2007

DAVID OPIE def BILL GALLOWAY 25/17

Today David Opie won his first State Singles Title in a top class game against a valiant Bill Galloway.
David's Brother Justin won his State Singles Title 10 years ago.

The game got away with David on fire straight away and saw him shoot out to a 11/2 lead and it was just a matter of time most people would have thought, and perhaps a repeat of the "Ant" V The Jones Boy game. Well Bill Galloway had other ideas and showed plenty grit, skill and determination that he was not here for a poor performance.

Bill Managed to be 4/14 down and from here on he out bowled David with precision draw shots and a couple of trail shots thrown in. David Opie had stopped playing a great game, Bill has found superb touch. Bill had by now cut the score to a manageable situation to be 14/17 down.
Well were not to know at this point of time but it was to be the end for Bill, David picked up the next 6 shots to lead 23/15 to shut the game down and cruised thru to win 25/17.

Bill had many very close bowls over the whole game but David had them a bit closer or drove Bill's close bowls out of the head or killed the end.
This was a feature of David Opie's game and certainly had an impact on the result of this game

It was a quality performance from David who is a genuine star of the game.

After the game Bill Galloway, always the great sportsman, paid Dave a huge compliment and said David played the better and it was a more than well deserved to win

DAVID OPIE def ANTHONY PROVOST 25/24

January 30, 2007
Sherro wasn't able to be at this game and also hard to make out how the card was scored. It hasn't been done properly but I will try to interpret the card.
all reports say it was cracker of a game. Just taking a glance at the card David Opie shot out to lead 10/1 and increase his lead to 14/3 on the 10th end and well in command.
The Big Ant really had some work to do but found himself 6/18 on the card. Once again trying to interpret this card 7/19, 10/19, 11/20, 13/21, 14/21, 17/21, 17/23, 18/23, 21/23, 23/23, 24/23, 24/25..
Sherro said the Ant had several gears and would apply a gear to the situation at hand and as we can see he obviously applied top gear here to come from an almost impossible position and if this darn card is correct it shows him hit the front. Only the really great players can do what Ant did today.

After the game I spoke with David and he said
" Sherro, my first two bowls won it for me and I can honestly say that I played at my very best to win this one and could not play any better, Anthony is just one heck of a mighty player"

DAN PENMAN v BILL GALLOWAY 25/19

Once again I was not able to see this game. What the card tells me Bill Galloway got away to a great start to lead 6/0 after two ends and from then on it always playing catch up for Dan Penman. Well Dan just couldn't get that 6 shot buffer back and the 9th end shows the card, Bill 16/5.
Things were going extra well for Bill, who was playing a mighty game. Dan had to find something if he was to capitalize on yesterdays brilliant effort. Well he rolled up the sleeves and got stuck in playing some great drives to hold Bill from breaking right away with the game. We find the card showing Bill still holding the lead 20/17 and Dan had a sniff of victory in the air.
Bill steadied and held on to win a well deserved game

It looks like Dan Penman has signaled to the bowling world he has really arrived and has matured into a fine player and those who saw the brilliant game he and Trystan Smallacombe had would agree.
