What a wonderful game of bowls we saw in the final of the Sorrento Master Singles.
Tony Krajancic plays the best draw drive game that I have seen played in W.A.
His hit rate is extroadinarily high, his draw shot under pressure is enormous..
David Opie is clearly head and shoulders above among many of our best players
and what a tragedy that he unavailable to play State Bowls, he is one
of very very few players in W.A who could crack a place in the Australian squad.
He is the quite man of Lawn Bowls in W.A and he lets his bowls do the talking.
--------------
------------------David
Opie Sorrento Master Singles Champion 2006
This game started out with both coming to terms with the windy and blustery
conditions.
David got away to a good start to have Tony 6/1 on the 5th end. He was using
the wide hand with good effect. The heads were not all that flash because it
was so windy.
From this point on we saw Tony pulling out some great drives to quell the effective
draw shots of David to make it 6/5 on the 8th end. It was at this point of
time that David changed from the wide hand to the narrow hand and there is
no doubt that had he not changed it would have been curtains for him.
At the 16th end we saw Tony Krajancic in front
leading 13/10 and playing exceptionally well and from then on the game intensified
with both players outstanding, going drive for drive and draw for draw.
Neither was safe when holding the shot as the other would get it back with
a brilliant upshot or drive. David forged to the lead on the 27th end and
looked to have it in the bag to lead 20/15.
Tony had other ideas and really had to dig deep with sensational drives and
deft draws to keep David on his toes and passed him to be 23/21, then 24/21
on the 31st end. It appeard that Tony had won the match on the 31st end when
they measured for two shots.
Both players threw everything into it with fantasic bowls in such windy conditions
and it was David who when holding one on the last end drew another to seal
a dramatic victory.
Both players can be proud of this game which was as good a game as one would
wish to see, they both played the shots they had to when ever the situation
demanded to make it a very exciting contest.

SEMI-FINALS
David Opie played Gary Caffell in what appeared to be a onesided game on
the scorecard with David establishing his superiority leading 10/8, 19/8,
23/10 and it really looked all over.
Well Gary is not known for chucking
in the towl and when you think about his amazing win against Reg Humphreyson,
could he do it again against the super star of the Tournament? Gary gave
it an almighty shake from the 19th end on to score 12/23, 14/23, 15/23, 15/24,
17/24, 21/24, 21/25.
What we have to bear in mind here is that he placed
himself in with a chance to win the game needing four, and that is possible
to get on one end when you are on 21, to force an incredible victory. It
never eventuated and he lost the game but the message is clear don't take
your foot off the accelerator if you are leading Gary in any game.
Gary Caffell (pictured) accepting the third place trophy and he has a hidden
talent, he tells a great joke which he shared with the audience
Tony Krajancic played Trystan Smallacombe
Our scorecard shows that Tony was in control against Trystan and reports
from the game were that Tony drove Trystan off the green hitting everything
he went for. It appears that Tony was in total control for the whole game.
This might be a first for Trystan, last years winner, to play against a player
who's game is very similar to the great Rob Parrella, and we know how hard
it is to combat that style of play when they are on song.
The
score was 25/15
