---------------Sorrento Masters singles 2007

MANY THANKS TO IAN WITTBER WHO DOES A GREAT SERVICE TO BOWLERS IN MAKING THIS EVENT HAPPEN AND FOR HIS HELP AND ASSISTANCE IN GETTING SCORES FOR THIS EVENT TO OUR VISITORS.

A great day with four previous winners of the State Singles in the semi-finals

December 4, 2007
Ross Dempsey has been around the place in most major singles events, he is a State Singles winner.
Two years ago Ross was runner up in this event to Trystan Smallacombe and today he won the Sorrento Master Singles against one the great players in the game today, a true champion, John Goddard.

------------------Ross Dempsey Sorrento Master Singles Champion 2007

-------------------
--------------------Ross Dempsey

It was hard to predict who might win this game, John Goddard was lauded by one of his opponents that he was bowling like a machine in an earlier game . Ross Dempsey had won his semi- final against Last years winner, the very talented David Opie playing a game that he has never displayed previously. Attacking the head instead of his usual draw shot type game

The game was a hard fought affair, the breeze was fishtailing and making it hard to keep a good line for both players however it was Ross who found weight and line quicker than John and he shot away to lead 8/1 on end 5. John Goddard found weight and line to make an impact on the scoreboard and 5 ends later he was 7/9 down and threatning to take over. Up to this time John's drives were working a treat and playing a big part in his comeback, often going for a single bowl and hitting it plumb centre

From here on it was hard going for both players and not much between them up till the 17th end when Ross Dempsey broke away with good close bowls. This is where John Goddard's great driving throughout the event started to let him down with costly misses.
It was noteable that Ross played only one drive in this game when down three shots. He collected the jack but it slicd the wrong way and it was easy for John to draw shot

Ross went onto take out the game, he was never headed at any time thru the match and from halfway into the game my feeling was he would win because he was drawing better than John.
All in all another great match in the Sorrento Masters played between two champion sportsmen

--------------------John Goddard Runner up in the Sorrento Masters 2007

----------------------------John Goddard

The Semi- finals were both fantastic contests. J. Goddard bt Rod Heaton 25/19
John Goddard defeated Rod "Rocket" Heaton in a game that was in doubt for most of the contest. The standard was very good with John Goddard at his driving best. Rocket Heaton met all the pressure that was applied to him. On the 22cd end Rockett was 17/14 in front but there was no certainty that he could win the game. From this point on John Goddard applied all the pressure and went to lead 23/17 and finally 25/19. It was a great contest and I am sure that Rod Heaton will feature in the business end of major events from here on.

The other semi-final between Ross Dempsey and David Opie was a ripper of a game and the score did not reflect the standard of the game. Ross Dempsey bt David Opie 25/13
Ross Dempsey shot out to lead 9/1 after 5 ends had been played and was looking good and deserved his lead, Ross was reading the wind better the David.
David fought back as we all knew he would and was 8/13 down on the 9th end. It was on the 13th end where the score was 12/17 down for David and from here he played fantastic bowls as did Ross with many very tight heads being played. The difference was Ross Dempsey's shot play when moving into the head often turned Davids good bowls in nothing as every thing Ross hit turned to gold. The impressive thing about Ross's shot play was it almost always the right weighted shot to get the result..
The final score 25 / 13 does not reflect the true state and high quality of this game .

YOU WILL NOTICE ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE COLUMNS DAVIES PLAYED HEATON--THE SCORE HEATON WINS BY IS ON TOP OF HIS NAME 25/11 IT IS THE SAME FOR ALL OTHERS, STRACHEN BEAT STRAHAN 25/22 AND SO FORTH
