THE FINALS
Cockburn Roosters V Cambridge Knights
A fantastic game on our hands here for the second semi-final.
The two games played in the home and away games see just 6 shots the difference.
Reigning premiers Cockburn, started the season off very slowly and managed
to win 5 games in the first round and were looking vulnerable. They picked
up some handy recruits and away they went in the second round and were unbeaten
in this round to top of a magnificent season of acheivement so far.
Cambridge were on top of the table for most of the season and surrendered the
top spot, along with the right to play the finals at home in the last home
and away game after losing to the Bulls. They have been a breath of
fresh air for the competition. Players from last season have stepped up with
their performances, With Trystan Smallacombe leading the way for the Knights
they have acheived what they set out to do and the recruiting committee have
done their job very well.
Now the finals will be the test they
have waited for and Cambridge should have plenty of confidence to do the job
and bring home the premiership flag.
The main concern for Cambridge is the form of Brian Katunarich's rink who were
smashed in their last game at home against Bedford, and while they have a
good win ratio they have a minus aggregate 10 /7 - 8.
This rink lost 16/26 to Steve Srhoy in the second round
John Rainoldi hit top form with a brilliant display in his last game where
he single handedly won the game against Pieter Harris (Bedford) and that augers
well for this game, tho I still feel the rink is suspect and the other three
members of the rink have to lift and play to their true ability. My spies tell
me they were beaten position for position against Bedford and it was JR's play
that saved the day to win the game.
This rink won with ScottEdmonds as skipper to almost carry
the agg. defeating Joe Galipo 28/14 in the second round game
Trystan Smallacombe has lost 6 games this season and the losing scores of 4/2/2/1/1/1
would suggest
his
rink have nothing to fear in this game if they maintain their form. Drawshot
power from this rink is exceptionally good. Scotty Edmonds was on fire as was
the reliable Nicky Lewis while Brian "Kelvin"
Kiely has produced
some outstanding leading performances this year. This rink will be very hard
to beat and should lead the way for Cambridge
This rink lost 18/20 to D. Brown in the second round
Trystan Smallacombe Cambridge (pictured) Weight control
magnificent. Number one player this year at Cambridge
Ron Stockton has one of the best leads in the competition, Harold Christian
who was brilliant against Bedford. The other players Tony Walsh and Chris
Lander are very reliable performers so we can expect the rink will be hard
to toss and can stand up to the pressure that will surely be applied.
This rink lost 22/24 to Russell Hughes in the second
round
Russell Hughes Cockburn (pictured below) Best skipper in
One Red over the past two years. Draw shot supreme, drives just as good, hard
to beat whatever the circumstance of a game.
Russell Hughes has continued on with another outstanding season to be equal
best rink in the competition, Steve Cerff has been a most reliable player and
the very steady Alan Petchell has made the right move joining the Roosters
after round 5. Dan Penman is a quality lead.
What ever Cambridge team draws this rink will
have their work cut out to beat them.
Steve Srhoy is a legend of the game and represents the heart and soul
of Cockburn. A dedicated player who has had yet another outstanding season,
He has the brilliant Glen Vaughan along with Ivan "SuperGlue" Jakovich
and Silvio Vassalio working hard for the Roosters.
Daniel Brown has had a very good season with some huge wins on the ledger and
if his rink of Mike Zusman, who has a very good rapport with Dan and John Ravilich
who was a sensational player in last years grand Final and the ageless Peter
Novak who is a quality player can fire to their ability they will be hard to
stop.
Gary Carberry has been an enormous recruit for Cockburn winning 4/2 + 26 which
is very pleasing for Cockburn
Norm Pascoe is one of the best ever thirds and always busy in the big games,
Peter Sardelic is one of lawn bowls greats but hasn't had many games this year,
just his presence should inspire his team mates and leader Joe Galipo has been
the utility player this season and has served Cockburn very well.

Wanneroo Express V Bedford Bulls
Both these sides have had a turn at hammering one and other
this season as the two games they have played shows.
The Bedford Bulls have acheived much this season with a
very good recruiting campaign and to have finished third is a very good acheivment.
While the team had an outstanding first round with only two losses The second
round found them out somewhat to see them drop 5 games. The Bulls have had
a one rink problem most of the year and if not for the great efforts of Pieter
Harris who took over the reigns a month or so ago and The Jones Boy, Bedford
would have not made it to where they are on the ladder.
The Bulls face their biggest moment for many seasons and this game or games
will tell if they have the cattle to go with the job for next season.
Wanneroo, One White Premiers last season on the other hand have had a sensational
year to make the four. They have also recruited very well getting some quality
players. Their strength has been in the crunch games, there was plenty of
them along the way. Getting the players to be more consistent and learning
to cope with pressure has been the main ingredient for Wanneroo. Overall
Wanneroo management would be very happy to make the four in their first season
back in One Red. I am sure they will be very competitive and will present
themselve extremely well over the weekend.
The ever changing rink of Barry Gartrell has not enjoyed the best of seasons
as the stat sheet shows however if they can play to their ability they could
win their game if we use the last game of the season against Trystan Smallacombe
as a guide. The change to third for Mel Lemos and with Keith Manton leading
will give the rink some spark to go on and be very competitive. Barry Gartrell
was very good against Cambridge and if the team follows anything can happen.
This rink
went down to Stein Davies 13/30
Pieter Harris, who has been a tower of strength for the Bulls this season,
is skipper of the best rink in the One
Red
competition, they should be a problem for ever draws them. Pieter has
shown good leadership since taking over as the boss, Third Lance Strahan
will fill the bill and at his best is very good, while Chilli Illich has
been pretty steady all year and played his part in the 13 wins acheived,
John Carlsen has had a spell in the reserves and played well enough to regain
selection for the most important game of the year
Pieter Harris Bedford (pictured) had a stellar year top skip in One Red
This rink won against Clive Adams 27/25
Stu Bainbridge has done a very good job skippering and shown he is a very
valuable part of the Bulls set up, he has stats of 10/7/1 +45 and represents
great value
for the Bulls, Jon Trewhella after a slow start to the season is now playing
the bowls everyone knows he can play. Kevin Collins will play second,
and has played all the positions pretty good and will put in a big game for
sure. Matt Trewhella is a quality leader for the Bulls and will play a major
role in the fortunes of this rink in the finals.
This rink lost against Geoff Ellis 14/22
The
Jones Boy still has had the whole town talking about him after a wonderful
season, and what a great asset he is to the Bulls. Billy Richo, such a dedicated
player has given his all this season and we can see the results, while Paul
Hunter has shown outstanding form at various times this season and another
reason why this rink did as well as it has. Peter Hunter has retained his
position as leader and will be looking for a big game
The Jones Boy Bedford (pictured) brilliant season for the Bulls
This rink went down to Reg Humphryson 19/26
The Stein Davies team is the leading rink at Wanneroo
and have performed extremely well in their first season in the One Red division.
Neville Stevens has been a big recruit for the club has been an asset, Murray
Hulbert has played plenty of top games and is ready to turn it on, while
Derek Griffen has been very steady. This rink will be hard to beat
Geoff Ellis has had an up and down year, was leading skip for a period earlier
in the season and were almost unbeatable. Ron Bates has also had ups
and downs has played with injury but is ready willing and able to play the
games of his life, has slotted into the the thirds position nicely. Ted Alden
has fitted in very well and has done his part to
help out while Sean Wright has certainly had his moments thru the season. This
rink will be very competitive
The Wanneroo Wizard Clive Adams
and his rink came home with a flurry and looks to have hit their best form
at the right time, There have been changes to his rink thru the season. Rus
Bates appears to have settled into the thirds role nicely while Gary Cox
has played some big games for the Roo Boys and Phil Potts has had many a
good game leading. On current form they are a 50/50 chance to win
against who ever they draw.
Reg
Humphryson and his rink are unbeaten in the four games played since he was
promoted to Skipper.
One of those wins was against the Jones Boy. Graham Adamini has moved around
in different positions and now appears to have found third might be best
for him. Graham White, a former Morley bowler broke into the the team and
is a very handy player, Ken Boswell returned to the leaders role and has
contributed to Wanneroo's success this season. This rink has been impressive
and looks hard to beat after 4 straight wins.
Reg Humphryson Wanneroo (pictured above) terrific job
