Where and how did you start
I first joined Morrison Park Bowling Club around 1980 (strewth – that
long ago?) after I realized that the fast bowlers were getting too fast for
me, and my ankles were no longer standing the strain of tennis and squash.
True, having both parents who had been heavily involved in the game, influenced
my decision to eventually take up bowls.
Occupation
Glorious retirement – after a career as a Public Servant-cum-Accountant
Other Clubs
Morrison Park (when I lived in Swanview).
Derby Bowling club (when I lived in Derby).
Bedford Bowling Club (when I eventually returned to live in Morley).
Bowling achievements
Achievements I managed to be part of winning Club Championship Fours, Triples
and Pairs teams at Morrison Park. I also won the Club Scroungers title and
Handicap singles a couple of times, but managed only to be runner-up in a
Singles Championship final.
Whilst in Derby I managed to win the Club singles (no mean feat – I
had to get through a section of six to get to the final).
In addition, I represented the West Kimberley Region at the Arafura Games
in Darwin (in Pairs in 1993, and singles in 1995).
This was an interesting competition – playing against National representatives
from Hong Kong, New Guinea, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, and State representatives
from the Northern territory and Queensland.
I have been a member of two winning Bedford teams taking out the Bedford
Bowl consecutively in 2003 and 2004.
Also at Bedford I have been part of winning teams in the Club Championship
Pairs, Triples (twice) and Fours, plus Champions Scrounger once.
In my youth I had a go at most sports available – football, cricket,
tennis squash, basketball, etc. – displaying varying levels of skill.
Best moments
In bowls – undoubtedly being part of the first Morrison Park side to
win the Second Division Pennant for the first time ever.
The side just managed to finish on top of the Colour Division and make the
play-off, and then won the Pennant Final after playing an extra end.
Worst moment
Probably recovering from that Pennant Final win.
Seriously, though, I enjoy every game of bowls – win, lose or draw
(although the losses certainly hurt).
Best Player
I was fortunate enough to have seen David Bryant play in the Commonwealth
Games in Perth in 1962 (shows how old I am!) way before I started playing.
He was just a class above anyone else in his era.
Of the current bowlers, Peter Sardelic is outstanding as a skip – with
those ‘lucky’ shots that he plays time and again.
Favourite holiday destination
Anywhere warm and sunny with lots of good food and drink.
Maybe that’s why I’m happy with the prospect of Gwenda and me
going to Italy and Greece again shortly.
Hobbies
The sign in my front yard says it all – “Bugger the Garden – I’m
going to Bowls”.
Plus I enjoy mucking around on the computer.
Favourite Meal
Risotto di Mare (seafood risotto)
Four Dinner guests
guests Not counting the likes of Sophia Loren (forget the dinner!).
The most interesting dinner guests I can think of would be Chairman Mao Tse-Tung,
John Kennedy, Ghenghis Khan, and Alexander the Great.
These blokes had phenomenal charisma as world leaders, even though their
ideologies were completely different.
Favourite drink
Got to vary it – can’t have our Bar Staff becoming complacent
thinking they know what to pour for me.
Last film seen
Gee! This was ages ago. Probably “A Place in Tuscany”.
I did tape Stanley Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange” recently.
Really scary – considering it was first screened over 30 years ago.
Best Film seen
The Magnificent Seven
Last book read
“The Princess Bride” screenplay by William
Golding. I reckon that my kids and I have watched the video a hundred times.
Best book
I could say: “Business Finance” by Pearson and Reid – but
I would be lying.
Best music
I like jazz, but mostly listen to Country and Western
Favourite song,
Next season, it will be:
“ WE ARE THE BULLS, THE MIGHTY BBEDFORD BULLS

Worst moment
Losing the Bedford One White Saturday Pennant final against Bassendean at
Thornlie Bowling Club, in controversial circumstances.
Losing to Ron Taylor in the 1986 State Singles after being up 20 – 11.
Best Player
There have been many but the record of North Perth’s Harry Snook up
to the 1960’s would be hard to beat in any era. The most naturally
talented player would be Bert (Razor) Sharp and the best Skipper “Sardi”.
